Adjunct Instructor in the Adult Basic Education Program

Do Great Things! Durham Technical Community College is hiring an adjunct instructor in the Adult Basic Education Program. The Reading/English/Mathematics Instructors are responsible for providing a quality learning environment to College and Career Readiness students. The faculty members provide instruction and complete other duties and responsibilities in accordance with the mission and policies of the college. This posting is part of a pool recruitment process, which means we are collecting applications for potential openings that may arise during the academic year.

This position may not be for an immediate need. Instead, your application will be kept on file and reviewed as opportunities become available. Pool positions are used to identify qualified candidates in advance, allowing us to fill roles more efficiently when vacancies occur.

Examples of Duties
  • Conducts assigned classes in accordance with the C&CR course descriptions and the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
  • Develops lesson plans based on the NC Adult Basic Education Content Standards and instructs students in person and virtually to ensure student success.
  • Uses a variety of instructional technologies such as smart phones, clickers, computers, and digital imaging to provide contemporary presentations in the classroom.
  • Ability to adapt teaching methods and materials to meet the interest and learning styles of students.
  • Maintains professional competence by participating in professional development opportunities and incorporating them into instruction.
  • Maintains student records, forms, process reports, and all other required paperwork in a punctual and efficient manner.
  • Assists with the registration process and academic advisement of students.
  • Be available to teach both day and evening classes, asynchronous and synchronous classes, and off campus classes as part of the regularly assigned teaching load.
  • Enforces academic policies and procedures at all times, and complies with all other institutional rules and regulations pertinent to classroom instruction and general employment.
  • Must complete mandatory training.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree (or higher) in instructional discipline, or related field is required.

Work Experience:

One year of successful teaching experience in a community college or similar postsecondary institution or evidence of other appropriate experience relevant to the position is required.

  • Demonstrates professional competence in oral and written communication needed for effective teaching;
  • Ability to maintain clear and meaningful criteria or standards for effective performance;
  • Possesses a strong knowledge of computer fundamentals, such as word processing, manipulation of spreadsheets, presentation programs, and computer aided instructional technology;
  • Sensitive to the needs and expectations of disadvantaged students;
  • Promotes relationships of trust and respect throughout the college and the community;
  • A valid North Carolina motor vehicle operator's license.

Physical Demands:
The physical demands described as follows are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:

  • Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time;
  • Ability to lift, at times, 10 lbs.; and
  • Good eye/hand dexterity.

Working Hours:

The Part-time Instructor is required to work as contracted per course, which may include day and/or evening responsibilities and duties. Work duties and responsibilities may be at the college's main campus, branch campuses, or other locations as assigned.
