Job Description

Reports to:

Principal.

Supersedes:
May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.

Purpose:

To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.

Licensure:
Applicants must hold or be eligible to hold a NC Teaching License in Science (Grades 9-12).

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Management of Instructional Time: The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment ready at the start of each lesson, gets the class started quickly, and maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task.
  • Management of Student Behavior: Established rules and procedures for routine administrative matters, verbal participation, movement, and routine monitoring during all activities; stops inappropriate behavior promptly while maintaining student dignity.
  • Instructional Presentation: Begins lessons with a review of previous materials, introduces objectives, speaks fluently, provides examples, assigns tasks, asks appropriate questions, manages pacing, makes efficient transitions, ensures assignments are clear, and summarizes the main points.
  • Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance: Maintains clear standards and due dates, circulates during class work to check performance, uses oral and written checks, and poses single questions.
  • Instructional Feedback: Provides feedback on in‑class work, promptly addresses out‑of‑class work, supports correct responses, and probes with more time or clues when needed.
  • Facilitating Instruction: Has an instructional plan compatible with school and system‑wide goals, uses diagnostic information, maintains accurate records, aligns objectives, learning strategies, assessment, and student needs, and uses available resources.
  • Interacting Within the Educational Environment: Treats all students fairly, interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and community.
  • Performing Non‑Instructional Duties: Carries out non‑instructional duties as assigned, adheres to laws and policies, follows a professional development plan.

Minimum Training and Experience

Degree in education or a related area that qualifies for licensure by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

Physical Requirements: Ability to use a variety of equipment, exert negligible force to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects, and stand or walk as required for light work.

Data Conception: Ability to compare or judge characteristics of data, people, or objects.

Interpersonal Communication: Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey information, and to receive instructions from superiors.

Language Ability: Ability to read various documents, prepare correspondence and reports in a prescribed format.

Intelligence: Apply logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw conclusions, and interpret technical instructions.

Verbal Aptitude: Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, follow oral and written instructions, and communicate in technical or professional language.

Numerical Aptitude: Use of basic arithmetic, decimals, percentages, descriptive statistics, inference, and theory.

Form/Spatial Aptitude: Inspect items for correct length, width, and shape.
