Position Summary:
The Middle School Montessori Family & Community Coordinator serves as a bridge between school, home, and community to ensure that all students successfully transition into the Montessori adolescent program. This position focuses on supporting students currently underrepresented in middle Montessori schools, who are new to Montessori education, and those that may not have prior Montessori elementary experience. Through mentoring, family engagement, community partnerships, staff professional development, and culturally responsive outreach, the liaison fosters a strong sense of belonging, confidence, and academic success while strengthening relationships between families and the school community.
This position is contingent on grant funding and is scheduled to end on September 30, 2029. This position is directly supervised by the principal of Lakewood Middle Montessori and will be onsite at Lakewood MMS when school is in session. Employee responsibilities will be defined in coordination with the MSAP Grant Director and up to 20% of staff time will also provide support to Lucas Montessori.
Responsibilities& Duties
Student Mentoring & Support
- Provide individualized mentoring for students transitioning into the Montessori middle school environment.
- Assist students in understanding Montessori expectations, routines, and adolescent work cycles.
- Help students develop self-advocacy, organization, leadership, and executive functioning skills.
- Conduct regular check-ins with identified students and collaborate with teachers to monitor progress.
- Facilitate peer mentoring and leadership opportunities for new students.
- Promote a positive school culture that supports belonging, identity development, and student voice.
Family Engagement
- Build trusting relationships with families through consistent communication and outreach.
- Provide orientation and ongoing education about Montessori philosophy and adolescent development.
- Connect families with school resources and opportunities for involvement.
- Organize workshops that help families understand how to support their child's success in a Montessori environment.
- Serve as a liaison between families and school staff to address questions, concerns, and barriers to engagement.
Staff Capacity & Sustainability
- Develop practical resources, guides, and tools for staff and families supporting students new to Montessori.
- Provide staff learning, coaching, and collaboration around effective transition and support practices.
- Develop and document transition, mentoring, and family-engagement practices that can become part of ongoing school operations.
- Work with school leadership to transition effective practices and responsibilities to existing staff before the position ends.
Community Outreach
- Develop partnerships with community organizations, local businesses, universities, and cultural organizations that support student success.
- Coordinate community-building events that celebrate diverse cultures and strengthen relationships among students, families, and staff.
- Organize family nights, service-learning opportunities, mentoring events, and cultural celebrations.
- Connect families with community resources that support educational, social, and emotional well-being.
Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
- Collaborate with administrators, counselors, teachers, and student support staff to identify students who may benefit from additional mentoring.
