Hours:

8:00am - 5:00pm, Monday-Friday

This is a "hybrid" position with the option to work remotely up to 3 days a week pending acceptable performance.


*** This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 sign‑on bonus that will be paid upon successful completion of the new hire’s six‑month probationary period. Internal promotional/transfer hires are not eligible.


*** This position will also be posted as a Principal Engineer (CE III). Only one position will be filled depending on qualifications. You must apply for both positions to be considered for either the Sr. Engineer (CE II) or the Principal Engineer (CE III) position.

Position Overview

The purpose of this position is to prepare complex professional civil engineering work performed in the planning, surveying, design, review, contracting, inspection, field supervision, and maintenance of multiple types of municipal engineering projects and systems. These systems include roads, water systems, sewer systems, stormwater conveyance systems, stormwater management systems, wastewater treatment systems, water treatment systems, reservoir and pumping systems. Other duties include providing administrative direction to staff, attending meetings on projects, teaching and instruction of others in entry and advanced level civil engineering work, and development of entry level management skill sets.

Work is performed under the direct supervision of a registered, licensed professional civil engineer.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for preparing professional civil engineering work in planning, surveying, design, review, contracting, inspection, field supervision, and maintenance of multiple municipal engineering projects and systems.
  • Oversees data analysis by obtaining electronic data; reviewing raw data for accuracy; analyzing data for trends; and developing written reports.
  • Attends meetings on all types of engineering systems and interacts with internal and external customers to provide assistance as needed.
  • Provides technical and administrative support to supervising professional engineer; responds to and investigates questions or concerns; and types and sends technical correspondence.
  • Completes special projects by preparing presentations; participating in seminars; and updating standards and procedures.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field.
  • Five years of related engineering and/or project management experience.
  • North Carolina Engineer in Training (EIT) registration.
  • Valid North Carolina Class C driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record acquired within a time frame established by the City.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Four or more years of experience in site civil engineering as a professional engineer with municipal experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Includes experience in design of water lines, sewer lines, storm drainage systems, street plans and profiles, and sidewalks.
  • Experience in acquiring local permits (water, sewer, stormwater, stream buffer, NCDOT, railroad, etc.) highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in AUTOCAD 3D 2012 or newer.
  • Ability to design water lines, sewer lines, streets, and storm pipe systems.
  • Experience directing helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, or temporary employees.
