Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: Onsite, Durham, NC
Position OverviewWe are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to support the design and development of mechanical components, assemblies, and automated equipment. This role will focus on creating innovative, manufacturable designs while collaborating with cross‑functional teams throughout the product development process. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in plastic and injection molded part design, automation equipment, and mechanical product development.
Key Responsibilities- Design sheet metal, plastic, and machined components and assemblies for automated systems and equipment.
- Develop detailed 3D models, drawings, and engineering documentation using CAD tools.
- Analyze, test, and refine designs to ensure performance, reliability, manufacturability, and cost objectives are achieved.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop new products and systems.
- Work closely with manufacturing, technicians, suppliers, and engineering teams to support prototype development and production readiness.
- Support design reviews, engineering changes, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Create and maintain technical documentation for sourcing, inspection, manufacturing, and internal engineering use.
- Troubleshoot design issues and implement effective engineering solutions.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related discipline.
- 7+ years of mechanical design engineering experience.
- Strong experience designing plastic and injection molded components.
- Experience developing mechanical assemblies and components for automated equipment or machinery.
- Proficiency with Solid Works or similar 3D CAD software.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced engineering environment.
- Excellent communication and cross‑functional collaboration skills.
- Experience with robotics and automation systems.
- Background working in highly regulated or advanced manufacturing environments.
- Familiarity with design analysis and product testing methodologies.
- Experience using Minitab or similar statistical analysis tools.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes including machining, sheet metal fabrication, and plastics manufacturing.
