As the Financial Management Analyst III - Strategic Oversight, you'll be a vital member of the Provost Office team that provides financial oversight and support to a broad portfolio of academic, auxiliary, and academic support units.

The Financial Management Analyst III provides coordination and direction for financial management, planning, budgeting, reporting, accounting, and analysis activities across the Provost area management center. This includes oversight of 8 schools, 10 institutes and centers, and more than 20 support units, auxiliary services, and strategic initiatives.

You will support strategic, operating, capital, and multiyear planning; advise unitlevel and senior leadership; and perform complex and specialized assignments in financial and accounting operations. Your work ensures financial accuracy, strong internal controls, policy compliance, and high‑quality reporting that informs decision‑making at the highest levels of Duke leadership.

What You’ll Do Budget & Finance (20%)
  • Guide finance leads/business managers through analysis and budget preparation, including annual budgets, seasonal projections, out‑year plans, and capital planning.
  • Track performance against plans and provide variance analysis.
  • Collaborate with senior academic and administrative leaders on budget development and presentation materials.
  • Compile, analyze, and prepare summary reports for Provost leadership.
Financial Management & Control (20%)
  • Track and report on endowment and university funds supporting Provost priorities.
  • Distribute central funding and perform monthly, quarterly, and annual reconciliations.
  • Support year‑end close, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and balanced current funds.
  • Prepare and distribute financial reports across the management center.
Advisory - Accounting Structure (20%)
  • Provide expert guidance on Duke accounting structures, fund flows, and reporting practices.
  • Train finance/business managers on reporting development and Duke systems.
  • Represent Provost Finance & Administration on special projects involving processes, compliance, audit, reporting, and new systems.
Management Center Policy & Internal Control (15%)
  • Complete workflow approvals for journal entries, vouchers, and travel expenditures within specified thresholds.
  • Support tracking of policy exception approvals.
  • Manage financial system security access and elevate workflow concerns as needed.
Financial Oversight - Strategic Finance Oversight (25%)
  • Assist with oversight of centralized Provost funding allocations for strategic initiatives, academic priorities, and reserves.
  • Maintain funding agreements and ensure compliance.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the commitment‑tracking database for updates and maintenance with OIT.
  • Help develop allocation targets for PAS unit distributions.
  • Support additional duties and special assignments as needed.
What You Bring Education & Training

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Administration, or related field.

Experience

At least six years of experience in financial management, including financial analysis, reporting, budgeting, and financial modeling.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of Duke systems and policies.
  • Experience in staff supervision and performance management.
  • Proven ability to solve complex financial and operational issues.
  • CPA and/or MBA strongly preferred.
