Supervising Park Ranger

This promotional opportunity is open to all qualifying applicants.

Opportunity

This recruitment is being held to establish a Promotional Eligible List to fill County of Orange Supervising Park Ranger vacancies in the Resources & Development Management Department until the next recruitment. These positions are responsible for managing the operation and maintenance of Harbors, Beaches and Parks facility or multiple facilities.

Position
  • Provide public safety and resource protection to park visitors
  • Take action as the first responder to all medical, fire and other life threatening emergencies within HBP facilities
  • Enforce codified ordinances and County policies and procedures
  • Direct and supervise the work of subordinate staff, contractors, volunteers and alternative work forces
  • Issue parking citations to the public as required
  • Establish technical and safety training programs
  • Develop and supervise volunteer programs/activities
  • Prepare facility budget reports, maintenance inspection reports and work requests
  • Maintain and manage facility assets and inventory
Minimum Requirements
  • A citizen of the United States or satisfy an alternative to such citizenship which is allowed under the California Government Code to qualify for limited Peace Officer status
  • At least 21 years of age
  • A high school graduate or attained a satisfactory score of G.E.D. test or passed a California high school proficiency examination
  • Pass a background investigation conducted in compliance with the California Government Code, to the satisfaction of the County of Orange
  • Possession of a California Peace Officer Standards Training certificate equivalent to a level III POST reserve academy, or greater POST level certificate
  • Current certifications in first aid and CPR
Desired Knowledge And Abilities
  • Principals and techniques of supervision and management
  • Principals and practices of resource protection for natural, cultural, historical, structural facilities
  • Principals and techniques of urban, wilderness, natural and/or harbor and beach facilities operations and maintenance
  • Principals of outdoor recreation, community recreation, interpretive services, exhibits, special events and other visitor services
  • Codified Ordinances of the County of Orange, specifically division 2 & 5
  • Pc 832 requirements including citation preparation, arrest procedures
  • Current computer experience in Microsoft Office applications
  • RDMD/HBP Public Safety and Resources Protection Program
License Required

Possession of or ability to obtain a valid California Driver License, Class C or higher by date of appointment.

Qualified Candidate

Requires:

  • One year experience as a Senior Park Ranger with the County of Orange
  • Four years of full time paid experience in the management or operation of a park, beach, historical facility or a recreational area or equivalent
  • A combination of related education and experience that would demonstrate the possession of the knowledge and abilities listed in the minimum qualifications
Supervisory Skills
  • Manage and operate a major Harbors, Beaches and Parks facility
  • Organize, plan, supervise and evaluate the work of Park Rangers, Park Maintenance Supervisors, and other park maintenance personnel
  • Manage interpretive, educational, recreational and other public programs
  • Manage and ensure resources protection in assigned facility
Safety Knowledge
  • First responder/emergency medical/CPR
  • Principles and practices of fire suppression
  • Emergency vehicle operation procedures
  • Technical and safety training programs
Communication Skills
  • Use diplomacy when dealing with the public, community, environmental, homeowners groups, or other County/public agency employees and contractors
  • Effectively communicate with Park Rangers, Park Maintenance Supervisors and park maintenance personnel
  • Prepare facility budget reports, maintenance inspection reports, work requests, and other official facility correspondence
  • Write clear and concise reports, citations, technical or special reports, and correspondence
