Position: ACT/EMT-I - FULL TIME ONLY

Position Overview

The primary objective of EMS is to provide safe and compassionate ambulance and medical transportation, while preserving patients’ dignity and ensuring community safety. EMS personnel responsibilities include non‑emergency patient transfer, community event stand‑by, and response to emergency calls to assist in the provision of immediate care and transport.

Essential Job Functions
  • Attend orientation, EMS operations, compliance and emergency vehicle training; maintain EMS certification and other required programs.
  • Provide out‑of‑hospital care and safe ambulance transport in accordance with statewide protocols and medical command direction under WV EMS Rules and Regulations.
  • Lift, carry and balance a minimum of 125 lbs. alone and 250 lbs. with assistance, at a height of 33 inches, for a distance of 10 feet.
  • Hear, comprehend and respond to spoken information from co‑workers, patients, physicians, dispatchers and emergency scene sounds.
  • Communicate verbally in person, via telephone and telecommunications using the English language.
  • Read and comprehend written materials under stress; document patient information using an approved WV OEMS record system.
  • Demonstrate manual dexterity and fine motor skills needed for patient care; bend, stoop, crawl and walk on uneven surfaces.
  • Inspect EMS equipment; ensure adequate supplies, verify proper operation, refuel and fluid check the ambulance; report needed maintenance.
  • Respond to callback or call‑in emergency situations.
  • Assist other emergency personnel as required and complete tasks assigned by supervisors.
  • Maintain professional appearance and decorum; perform general maintenance and cleaning of stations, training facilities and ambulances; be a self‑starter with little oversight.
  • Perform event stand‑by operations including sporting events, community festivals and other large‑attendance events.
  • Respond to hazardous‑material incidents at the first responder level and function in uncommon situations; act during natural disasters and catastrophic events.
  • Understand stress response methods; ensure personal well‑being; apply body‑substance isolation and patients’ rights under HIPAA.
  • Interact professionally with outside agencies and personnel including medical staff, law enforcement, fire/rescue and communication personnel.
Requirements
  • General knowledge of EMS operations, ambulance use and EMS equipment.
  • Ability to learn through training using varied EMS methods.
  • Ability to acquire knowledge of road systems and the physical layout of assigned communities.
  • Skill to open and maintain an airway, ventilate a patient, administer CPR, and use appropriate medications and defibrillator devices. Provide trauma care including hemorrhage control, shock treatment, wound bandaging and immobilization of extremities and spine.
Working Environment / Conditions
  • EMS operations occur 24/7, 365 days a year in all weather conditions.
  • Personnel must be ready to respond immediately and maintain field operations until relief arrives.
  • Personnel operate in an uncontrolled public arena; must be mentally, physically and emotionally prepared for a wide variety of patient types, behaviors and situations. Safety, professionalism and compassion are essential traits for success.
Special Requirements and Qualifications
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of workforce evaluations or equivalent educational screening approved by Jan‑Care/GEMS.
  • Valid driver’s license with good driving history.
  • Drug‑free company – must pass initial and random screenings.
  • Background checks: OIG excluded individuals, criminal history, driving history, child/elder abuse, reference checks.
  • Maintain a valid telephone number.
  • Maintain Health Care Provider level CPR certification.
  • Maintain EMT‑I certification with the VW OEMS office.
  • Maintain ACLS, PHTLS, PALS certifications.
  • Provide proof of TB and Hepatitis vaccination.
