Critical Environments Operating Engineer
The Critical Environments Operating Engineer will support operation, inspection and maintenance of critical mechanical building equipment and systems across a multi‑building portfolio managed by JLL in the Raleigh/Durham metro area.
Location & ScheduleDurham, NC 27703 – On‑site. 2–48 hour weeks per month, shift Wednesday‑Friday + every other Saturday, 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM.
Responsibilities- Maintain, monitor and perform preventive maintenance of all building systems to ensure 100% uptime, including fire/life safety, HVAC, chillers, CRAC, plumbing, controls, UPS, switch gear, generators, transformers, hot water and other mechanical/electrical equipment.
- Operate, adjust and maintain refrigeration, chilled water, air‑conditioning equipment, boilers, ventilating/heaters, pumps, valves, piping and filters; record readings and adjust as required.
- Diagnose system malfunctions, determine root cause and take corrective action.
- Follow departmental policy for safe storage, usage and disposal of hazardous materials and maintain a clean, safe workplace.
- Understand site layout and manage incidents/event that may risk critical systems.
- Manage work orders via CMMS, vendor coordination, and customer‑facing tickets.
- Comply with emergency escalation procedures and be available for call‑out support.
- Support 24/7 data center operation with flexible hours to cover all shifts.
- Frequent walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, lifting (≥50 lb), stooping, working overhead.
- Climb ladders up to 30 ft and navigate rooftops.
- Work different schedules, holidays, weekends, after‑hours emergencies, and cover PTO shifts.
- High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- 2+ years of hands‑on experience operating and maintaining critical infrastructure, equipment and systems.
- 1+ year of experience with UPS, emergency generators, switchgears and chiller plants equipment.
- Valid state driver’s license.
- Background, drug/alcohol and MVR screening clearance.
- EPA 608/Universal certification.
- Proficiency with CMMS/BMS, Microsoft Office Suite (Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, One Note, Outlook).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Trade school, union training, military background or college education.
- Military experience in Army Prime Power, Navy ET/Nuke, Air Force HVAC/Power Pro/ Electrician.
- Trained in NFPA
70E.
