It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community.

Description of Work This position is located at Maury Correctional Institution Department at a multi custody male correctional facility, this position’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Directing and administering programs on a broader scope for offenders.
2. Directing a major program. (The primary programs areas are Offender classification; correctional programs (work release,incentive wage, study release, home leave, adult basic education, volunteer programs, religion, and recreation); and supportive counseling.)3. Supervising subordinate personnel who are responsible for the implementation, development, and maintenance of the programs on a daily basis.
4. Coordinating programs with custody staff.
5. Serving in a custody role during emergency situations as needed, such as disturbances and escapes.

Skills and Abilities

/Management Preferences Salary Range : $43,267 - $75,718

Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:
• Documented experience with report writing.
• Documented knowledge of case management practices, or supportive counseling techniques and/or interviewing techniques for intake assessments.

The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.
