Overview

Responsibilities- Sets up and operates machine tools such as manual lathes, mills, surface grinders, heat treat ovens, welders, sheet metal shear and brake to machine or fabricate parts. Uses hand tools as needed to fit and assemble parts.
- Machine, alter and repair components to required specifications from blueprints, old or worn parts, models, hand sketches, or verbal descriptions. May advise on design improvements to achieve desired benefits.
- Determine machining sequence to complete tasks in a timely manner and meet tolerance requirements with available equipment and tools, often with minimal supervision.
- Compute dimensions using basic math, geometry/trigonometry, and programs such as CAD (Draft Sight, Solid Works); interpret plan layouts to determine assembly methods and sequence of operations.
- Machine and fabricate using FDA-compliant materials like stainless steel, aluminum and acetal; plan material layout and marking for machining with standard practices.
- Verify dimensions, clearances and alignment using measuring devices (dial indicators, gauge blocks, thickness gauges, micrometers) to ensure precision.
- Collaborate with setup and manufacturing engineers or technicians to troubleshoot root causes and implement sustainable repair paths to return equipment to operation.
- Perform predictive and preventative maintenance and assist with updating maintenance programs.
- Support component modifications or custom guarding for new equipment installations to meet validation requirements and timelines.
- Document as-built state using sketches or redlined prints, and communicate modifications to engineering as needed.
- Organize and label new tooling, jigs, and fixtures; document daily work logs and track time in the system; maintain shop cleanliness.
- Manage material or tooling requests to maintain stock levels; collaborate with peers to ensure redundancy in machine shop operations.
- Perform work in compliance with all national and local codes; participate in on-call weekend rotation and respond to off-hours support calls as needed.
Education: Associate’s Degree in Tool Trade or Machinist Curriculum, or High School Diploma/GED with substantial journeyman training in tool making or equivalent.
Experience: 7–10+ years of experience in machine shop, tool and die making, or industrial maintenance.
Other: Ability to work with FDA-compliant materials; strong problem-solving, measurement, and documentation skills; willingness to work in a hands-on machining environment; eligibility for on-call rotations as required.
Compensation and Benefits- Salary range: $37.00 – $40.00 hourly; starting pay depends on location, experience, and education.
