Duke University Hospital is seeking motivated New Graduate Registered Nurses to join our Cardiothoracic Stepdown Unit (7100/7300). As part of Duke Health's mission of Advancing Health Together
, you'll work in a high-acuity, fast-paced environment designed to strengthen your clinical skills and support your transition to practice.
The 7100/7300 Cardiology Stepdown Unit at Duke University Hospital is a 31-bed, high-acuity unit caring for a diverse and complex cardiology population. Our team specializes in caring for patients with:
- Acute coronary syndromes
- Post-cardiac catheterization recovery
- Electrophysiology procedures
- Dysrhythmias
- Heart failure management
- Heart transplant evaluation/workups
- Congenital heart disease
- Multi-system involvement, including pulmonary, renal, endocrine, and neurological conditions
Many of our patients arrive directly from the ICU, post-procedure, or from outside hospitals requiring an elevated level of care.

As a Clinical Nurse (RN) at Duke University Health System, you will provide compassionate, patient-centered care while growing your nursing practice within a supportive and highly skilled team.
You will:
- Deliver and supervise direct and indirect nursing care using the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation)
- Provide specialized, evidence-based care aligned with the DUHS Professional Practice Model
- Participate in professional development, clinical ladder pathways, unit committees, educational programs, and quality improvement initiatives
- Deliver care in accordance with the North Carolina Board of Nursing scope of practice
- Uphold regulatory standards and contribute to a respectful, collaborative care environment
- Provide exceptional customer service and help maintain positive working relationships across the care team
- Plan, provide, and document nursing care according to physician orders and established policies
- Delegate tasks and supervise licensed and unlicensed care providers
- Support other healthcare professionals in delivering high-quality, coordinated patient care
- Assist in maintaining a safe, well-equipped care environment
- Prioritize workload and use available resources to ensure timely, efficient care
- Engage in ongoing professional development and maintain required competencies
- Support the learning and development of peers, students, and new team members
- Participate in performance improvement initiatives and operational enhancements
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support patient care
- No experience required for Clinical Nurse I (CNI)
- New Graduate RNs welcome - 1+ years of nursing experience required for Clinical Nurse II (CNII)
- Graduation from an accredited:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN)
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Nursing Diploma program
- RNs without a BSN must enroll in a BSN program within 2 years of hire and complete it within 7 years
- Current RN licensure with the North Carolina Board of Nursing or compact RN license (NC licensure required within 60 days of hire)
- BLS certification required
