Description Of Work

This position is located at Craggy Correctional Center, in the beautiful mountains of Asheville, North Carolina. Craggy Correctional Center is a Medium/Minimum‑custody prison housing male offenders and serves as the hub for healthcare for the male offender population. The facility houses approximately 182 minimum and 408 medium security custody male offenders. This position is the highest level of nursing supervision and the Health Authority responsible for the daily management and operation of the facility nursing operation.

Nurse Supervisor ensures professional nursing care and treatment are afforded to patients within medical policies, protocols and consistent with Board of Nursing requirements. Responsibilities include direct supervision of all nursing staff, including staff schedules, assignments, orientation, performance improvement evaluations, and clinical competency evaluations. The Nurse Supervisor conducts needs assessments, develops, implements and evaluates treatment plans, and provides patient care and education to offenders.

The role ensures all policies and procedures are followed and submits short‑ and long‑term goals to Leadership for review and approval. Administrative duties include planning, organizing and managing daily operations, quality assurance, Human Resource management functions, and staff development. The Nurse Supervisor develops and maintains effective communication and work relationships with physicians, upper management healthcare personnel, patients, families, agencies and others.

The Nurse Supervisor identifies and addresses quality monitoring and performance improvement issues for the facility and may be required to work any schedule to meet medical operational needs at the facility level.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities / Management Preferences

Considerable knowledge of professional nursing theory, techniques, and practices. Working knowledge of management and supervisory methods, practices, and procedures. Ability to implement the nursing process (assess, plan, implement and evaluate) to meet patient needs. Ability to direct and carry out prescribed medical treatments and therapeutic programs. Ability to plan, organize, and supervise the work of healthcare staff. Ability to actively motivate employees and develop team camaraderie and commitment towards meeting the objectives of higher management.

Ability to advise and counsel employees on job performance and conduct. Ability to actively coach and mentor staff. Ability to prepare and maintain reports of activities and patient progress. Ability to identify and address quality monitoring and performance improvement issues for a unit.
