Job Summary
The Nursing Assistant (NA) is a patient care support partner with the Registered Nurse (RN) and/or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). The NA provides direct care to patients, assists with non‑direct patient care unit coordination, and performs basic care and comfort standards. Responsibilities include maintaining the patient/family environment, supporting acutely ill patients, practicing medical asepsis, respecting dignity and privacy, adhering to policies and procedures, and documenting patient care accurately in the electronic health record.
ResponsibilitiesPrepare patients, equipment, and supplies for procedures and provide manual assistance as required. Obtain and record patient data for medical records and inform RN/LPN of information collected. Administer treatment and personal care procedures such as feeding, bathing, hair care, dressing changes, toileting, and bed‑making. Assist with ambulation, enemas, skin care, and bowel and bladder elimination. Participate in teaching activities, support providers and nurses with physical examinations, take and record vital signs, record intake and output, and apply ice bags.
Document and report changes in patient condition. Perform turns and positioning, feed patients, and provide fresh drinking water. Perform finger sticks for blood glucose testing and document results. Assist with admission, discharge, and transportation of patients. Follow standard precautions and use personal protective equipment as required. Collect, deliver, and conduct routine tests on patient specimens. Clean assigned area, stock and replenish supplies and equipment.
Participate in professional development and support development of other staff. May perform wound dressing changes for wounds over 48 hours old. Perform other related duties incidental to work described herein.
Working knowledge of routine and special treatment procedures, sanitation, personal hygiene, infection control, and the organization and layout of the hospital. Ability to withstand prolonged standing and walking, lift or move objects and patients weighing over 35 pounds with assistance or appropriate lift equipment, and establish effective working relationships with patients and staff. Must understand and follow oral and written instructions, and document and communicate information using computer and/or paper documentation tools.
Pre‑employment physical capacity testing may be required.
- Currently listed as a Nursing Assistant I (NA I) with the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Health Service Regulation.
- BCLS certification must be maintained/completed by the end of new hire orientation.
