Job Summary

The Bariatric Surgery Inpatient Advanced Practice Provider (APP) provides direct patient care services and performs medical acts under the supervision of a supervising physician to patients on the Bariatric Surgery service  APP performs physical exams, collects data and documents, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies, radiologic studies and professional consultations, prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, coordinates the care and discharge of patients, and provides direct care to patients on the Bariatric Surgery service.

The Bariatric Surgery APP contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and provides leadership to the organization.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Daily inpatient rounding on primary and consult teams
  • Assist with daily notes
  • Take first call on primary Bariatric Surgery patients
  • Review and order diagnostic and lab studies
  • Patient and family education
  • Provide continuity of care by working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams
  • Staff new consults for Bariatric Surgery at DRH
  • Assist with admissions
  • Manage/Change/Apply wound vacs
  • Assist in maintaining and improving quality metrics
  • Provide collaborative and cost‑effective care
  • No outpatient coverage currently
Physical and Mental Requirements
  • Able to articulate scope of practice and practice within guidelines as an APP in North Carolina and within DUHS
  • Able to independently seek resources and collaborate to solve complex problems
  • Able to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership, and others
  • Able to use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, perform health assessments, treatment, and follow‑up
  • Able to use fine motor skills
  • Able to record activities, document assessments & interventions; prepare reports and presentations
  • Able to use computer and learn new software programs
  • Able to provide leadership in clinical expertise and meet organizational goals
  • Able to navigate hospital and DUHS to provide clinical expertise to specific patient populations
  • Able to withstand prolonged standing and walking with the ability to move or lift at least fifty pounds
  • Able to remain focused and organized
  • Able to work collaboratively with all levels of personnel
Job Eligibility Requirements Education

NP:
Graduate of an accredited MSN or DNP Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program for adults.

PA:
Graduate of an ARC‑accredited Physician Assistant program. Master’s or Doctoral Degree preferred.

Certification

NP:
Acute Care Nurse Practitioner for adults (ACNP or AGACNP) or Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP or AGANP)

PA: PA‑C

Both: BLS required. ACLS and ATLS strongly recommended but not required.

Licensure

NP:
Current unrestricted RN licensure issued by or recognized by NCBON with authorization to practice as an NP.

PA:
Current unrestricted medical license issued by NCMB with authorization to practice as a PA.

Both:
Federal and state DEA with unrestricted prescriptive authority.

Experience

NP: 2+ years RN experience in clinical care of general surgery patients is strongly preferred; 1+ year NP experience preferred, ideally in general surgery capacity, but not required.

PA: 1+ year PA experience in clinical care of trauma or general surgery strongly preferred but not required.
