Registered Nurse (Experienced) – Multispecialty Operating Room

Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina seeks a Clinical Nurse III to work in the multispecialty operating room, supporting a surgical team that provides advanced care across various specialties.

• Identify care needs for patient populations at the unit level and provide leadership in the development of standards of care.
• Educate patients/families and staff on patient care and materials.
• Participate in educational activities, departmental committees, research projects, and other health‑related projects.
• Provide direction and guidance in the appropriate use, care, and control of material resources; appraise quality and effectiveness of equipment.
• Anticipate safety concerns in the care environment and intervene as necessary.
• Guide professional growth of others via precepting, role modeling, coaching, and mentoring.
• Lead unit‑level initiatives to improve quality of care or clinical outcomes.
• Perform related duties incidental to the described work.

• Knowledge of scope of practice for RN, LPN, and UNTC staff.
• Application of nursing process and professional theory, practice, and procedure.
• Assessment of nursing needs for acute and chronically ill patients and families.
• Independent resource seeking and collaborative work.
• Effective communication with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, and leadership.
• Education of patients/families aligned with nursing plan of care.
• Use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, treatment, and follow‑up.
• Fine motor skills proficiency.
• Competency in BLS and/or other life support as required.
• Accurate documentation of assessments, interventions, evaluations, and re‑evaluations.
• Computer proficiency and learning new software.
• Physical stamina: sustained standing and walking; organized focus.
• Knowledge of infection control and safety procedures.
• Compliance with The Joint Commission and other regulatory requirements.

• Accredited BSN program graduation.
• Current RN licensure in North Carolina; BLS required.
• Meeting DUHS Nursing Career Ladder Program Level III requirements.
• Preferred: 1 year of operating room experience.
• Employment of RN hired between July 1, 2014 and April 11, 2021 without a BSN encouraged to enroll within two years of start date.
• Pre‑employment physical capacity testing required.
