Position

Nursing Care Assistant I – Davis Ambulatory Surgery Center (PRN)

PRN schedule: 6:30 am – 3:00 pm, Monday–Friday, as needed.

Responsibilities
  • The Nursing Assistant (NA) is a patient care support partner with the Registered Nurse (RN) and/or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and performs work as delegated by the RN or LPN.
  • Provide direct care to patients and assist with non-direct patient care unit coordination.
  • Assist with basic care and comfort standards and understand patient population needs in the assigned area; assist the RN/LPN in the care of acutely ill patients.
  • Practice medical asepsis and respect the dignity, privacy, and cultural differences of patients and families.
  • Adhere to all basic policies and procedures and respond appropriately during emergencies.
  • Maintain the patient/family environment, perform general unit upkeep, order and maintain unit equipment, and order supplies as needed (with or without direct supervision).
  • Communicate effectively and document patient care appropriately in the electronic health record.
  • Prepare patients, equipment and supplies for procedures and provide manual assistance as required.
  • Obtain and record patient data for medical records and inform the RN/LPN of information collected.
  • Administer basic personal care procedures (feeding, bathing, grooming, dressing, ambulation assistance, skin care, and elimination) to meet patient needs and comfort.
  • Reinforce teaching as instructed by the RN or providers when needed.
  • Assist providers and nurses with physical examinations by helping position patients, applying non-sterile dressings, and assisting with weighing or vitals as directed.
  • Turn and position patients, provide hydration, and assist with feeding as necessary.
  • Perform fingerstick glucose testing, with appropriate training, and document results.
  • Assist with patient admission, discharge, and transportation; follow standard precautions and use PPE as required.
  • Collect, deliver and conduct routine tests on patient specimens; maintain area cleanliness and restock supplies and equipment.
  • Participate in professional development by maintaining required skills validation and attending educational offerings; support the development of other staff and learners.
  • May perform clean dressing changes for wounds over 48 hours old.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

  • Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification – Currently listed as a Nursing Assistant I (NA I) with the NC DHHS, with no substantiated findings of abuse, fraud, neglect or misappropriation of property. BCLS certification must be maintained/completed by the end of new hire orientation (typically within the first week).
  • Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities – Working knowledge of procedures and techniques for routine and special patient treatments; sanitation, hygiene, safety, and infection control; hospital layout; ability to stand/walk for extended periods; capable of lifting/moving objects and patients with assistance; ability to follow instructions and document information; ability to establish working relationships with patients and staff; basic bedside patient care knowledge; pre-employment Physical Capacity Testing may be required.
