General Description of the Job Class:
The Nursing Assistant (NA) works as a patient care support partner in collaboration with the Registered Nurse (RN) and/or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Under the direction and delegation of the RN/LPN, the NA provides direct patient care and supports unit operations. This role is responsible for delivering basic patient care and comfort while demonstrating an understanding of the specific needs of the patient population served.

The NA assists in the care of acutely ill patients and is expected to practice medical asepsis, maintain patient dignity and privacy, and respect cultural differences in all interactions. The Nursing Assistant maintains a safe and organized patient care environment, supports unit operations (including supply and equipment management), and responds appropriately in emergency situations. Accurate communication and documentation in the electronic health record are essential components of this role.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare patients, equipment, and supplies for procedures; provide assistance as directed
  • Collect and document patient data; promptly report changes to the RN/LPN
  • Provide direct patient care, including but not limited to:
    Bathing, feeding, grooming, and dressing Bed-making and linen changes Assisting with ambulation and repositioning Bowel and bladder care, including enemas Skin care and overall comfort measures Assist with physical exams and non-sterile dressing changes; obtain and record vital signs, intake/output, and weights Perform fingerstick blood glucose testing (with appropriate training) and report results Support patient admissions, discharges, and transportation Follow standard precautions and utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriately Collect, label, and transport specimens;

    perform routine tests as required Maintain cleanliness of assigned areas and ensure adequate stocking of supplies and equipment Reinforce patient education as directed by the RN and/or providers Participate in ongoing professional development and support training of peers and learners Perform clean dressing changes for wounds over 48 hours old (as applicable) Perform other related duties as assigned

    Current listing as a Nursing Assistant I (NA I) with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) with no substantiated findings Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within the first week of employment

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of patient care procedures and basic treatment techniques
  • Understanding of infection control, safety practices, and hospital protocols
  • Ability to document accurately and communicate effectively (written and verbal)
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build effective working relationships
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Physical ability to perform job duties, including:
    Prolonged standing, walking, bending, and lifting Safely move or assist patients weighing over 35 pounds with appropriate equipment or assistance
