Position Overview

The Quality Systems Specialist / Technical Writer plays a key role in supporting the development, maintenance, and control of the facility’s food safety and quality systems. This position is responsible for authoring, formatting, revising, and managing food safety documentation to ensure compliance with FDA, FSMA, GFSI, and customer requirements.

Working collaboratively with Quality Assurance, Operations, Sanitation, Maintenance, and Regulatory teams, this role ensures that written programs accurately reflect plant practices and are consistently audit ready.

Documentation & Technical Writing

  • Draft, revise, and maintain:
    • SOPs, SSOPs, and Work Instructions
    • HACCP / Preventive Controls documentation
    • Environmental Monitoring Programs
    • Recall, Traceability, Food Defense, and Food Fraud plans
  • Ensure documents are:
    • Clear, concise, and easy to follow
    • Aligned with current plant operations
    • Written in compliance with regulatory and certification standards
  • Convert technical and operational input into controlled, compliant documentation

Document Control & Records Management

  • Maintain document control systems, including:
    • Version control, approvals, and distribution
    • Removal of obsolete documents from use
    • Record retention and archiving
  • Ensure controlled documents are accessible to plant teams and auditors
  • Support electronic document management or QMS platforms

Audit & Compliance Support

  • Support preparation for:
    • FDA inspections
    • SQF / BRCGS / FSSC audits
    • Customer and internal audits
  • Compile audit evidence, binders, and documentation packets
  • Track corrective actions and support CAPA documentation
  • Assist with follow-up documentation and audit closeout activities

Training & Program Support

  • Assist with development of training materials linked to SOPs and programs
  • Ensure documentation supports effective onboarding and refresher training
  • Help maintain training records and compliance documentation

Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Work with Operations, Sanitation, Maintenance, and QA teams to:
    • Verify procedures reflect actual practices
    • Capture process changes and update documentation accordingly
  • Support change management for new equipment, processes, or products
What we require:
  • 1+ years of experience in Quality Assurance in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of HACCP principles and how they are used to identify and control food safety risks.
  • Experience assisting with HACCP documentation, records, or plan updates is a plus.
  • Solid familiarity with SQF requirements and food safety programs, with exposure to maintaining procedures, supporting audits, or keeping documentation organized and up to date.
  • Strong exposure to FSMA Preventive Controls and food safety plans, either through coursework, certification, or on the job experience.
  • Ability to support PCQI activities under guidance is preferred.
  • Proven experience writing SOPs, work instructions, specifications, and food safety plans.
  • College degree preferred especially science based (Microbiology, Chemistry, Food Science, Chemical Engineering, etc.).
