Job Title:
Formulation Scientist
Location:
Research Triangle Park, NC
Duration: 12+ Months Contract
Total Hours/week: 40 (1st Shift)
Description:
Client Technologies and Innovation, located in Research Triangle Park, NC, seeks a scientist to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary Innovation team developing medical technologies and solutions with an initial focus on interventional medical devices. The position will be responsible for assessing, developing, and testing new technologies for a range of medical devices, including drug-device combination products. The incumbent will design and execute experiments aimed at developing formulations for enabling controlled release of drugs/proteins and improving understanding of drug-material-tissue interactions that impact device performance.
Specific expertise is sought in formulation development using soft matter (polymers, colloids, etc.), materials structure-property elucidation, and controlled delivery of drugs or proteins. The candidate will carry out experimental studies related to drug/device combination technology within the Interventional Innovation R&D team at BD Technologies and Innovation (BDTI). They will provide expertise in drug formulation and delivery technologies, soft materials characterization, and drug-biomaterials-tissue interactions.
The candidate will plan and execute technical assessments of coatings for medical devices and drug delivery technologies/products and may include additional areas such as biocompatible implants and materials for surgical procedures. They will be responsible for executing technical work, communicating results to stakeholders, investigating and resolving technical problems, managing work streams to meet program objectives and timelines, authoring/reviewing SOPs, test/project reports, and other documentation.
The incumbent will work closely with R&D project team members and support functions, contribute intellectual property, create experimental designs, analyze experimental data, and help ensure a smooth transition of projects from the Innovation phase to product development.
Responsibilities also include working with team leadership to adapt to changing requirements and to contribute intellectually to areas beyond the immediate field.
Requirements- Formulation development using polymeric materials, micro/nanoparticles, colloids, etc.
- Structure-property characterization of soft materials.
- Hands‑on experience using analytical instrumentation and materials characterization tools (e.g., rheometer, spectroscopic methods, DSC, GPC, etc.) and interpreting resultant data.
- Ability to design, execute, and appropriately document experiments.
- Good written and verbal technical communication skills.
- Ability to effectively interpret and present scientific results.
- Working knowledge of drug delivery principles, ADME, PK/PD, and drug elution studies.
- Experience developing controlled delivery methods for drugs/other small molecules/proteins.
- Design of functional polymeric materials.
- Experience in basic synthetic chemistry (small molecules or polymer synthesis).
- Willingness to work occasionally with biological specimens (e.g., blood) for lab‑scale testing.
Graduate degree or equivalent work experience in the fields of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or related scientific discipline. Prior work experience in a medical device R&D organization is a plus.
