Position Summary

Conduct independent research activities under the guidance of a faculty mentor in preparation for a full‑time academic or research career.

Eligibility Requirements
  • Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate in Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Candidates with non‑US degrees may need to provide proof of degree equivalency.
  • International candidates may need to have the degree conferred before immigration proceedings.
  • Appointment term is limited per Duke Postdoctoral Policy.
  • Postdoctoral Appointee expected to publish results during the appointment.
Responsibilities
  • Perform full‑time research or scholarship, may include teaching responsibilities.
  • Maintain laboratory notebooks and research records.
  • Follow standards of responsible conduct in research.
  • Adhere to university standards regarding chemicals and safety.
  • Collaborate and communicate with mentor and multidisciplinary team.
  • Consult AAMC Compact and other university policies as appropriate.
Technical Tasks (select, must perform at least
2)
  • Laser‑based instrumentation design, fiber coupling, and optical characterization.
  • Experimental investigation and computational model simulation of laser‑induced bubble dynamics and material damage assessment.
  • Develop AI and machine learning models for robot‑assisted laser surgery and validate against experimental observations.
  • Support education activities of the PI through graduate student mentoring, lectures, and teaching assistance.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Ph.D. in Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or related area.
  • 0+ years of postgraduate research experience.
  • Excellent independent research skills and ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and formal writing skills.
