Position Summary
The City of Wilson is hiring a Fiber Optic Field Technician to perform specialized technical duties in the repair, maintenance, construction and splicing of the city’s fiber optic network, as well as installation of the PON equipment and services related to OSP. The role supports a highly reliable fiber optic communication network for employees and citizens.
Salary range: $49,800.37 (minimum) to $68,582.68 (midpoint). Competitive salaries and a best‑in‑class benefits package are offered.
Major Duties- Respond to emergency and non‑emergency repair calls regarding all aspects of the city's OSP fiber optic network.
- Perform construction, splicing, and distribution changes of the OSP fiber optic cables and install ONT units at customers’ homes and places of business.
- Conduct tests on the OSP network at the residence or business to troubleshoot problems.
- Make necessary repairs on the OSP facilities at the residence or business once a problem is identified.
- Assure the network functions properly before leaving the customer site.
- Attend safety and OSHA compliance meetings and training sessions as required.
- Fusion splice fiber optic cable, mount splice closures and ONTs, and perform other OSP functions directed by the OSP Operations Supervisor.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Serve as a backup to the Facility Services Technicians as workload demands.
- Be subject to call‑outs, stand‑on‑call duty, weekend and holiday work as service demands dictate.
- Follow department standard operating procedures, state and local laws, city, state, and federal regulations.
- Apply knowledge of fiber optic construction and maintenance procedures and PON network installation.
- Interpret guidelines in application when necessary.

- Read, write, and perform mathematical calculations equivalent to completion of high school.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience as a Fiber Optic Field Technician I and demonstrate advanced skill levels required for Fiber Optic Field Technician II.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Knowledge of standards, materials, techniques, and equipment used in OSP fiber optic installation, maintenance, and repair.
- Knowledge of PON networks and fiber optic transmission.
- Knowledge of department and city policies, procedures, and applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
- Skill in operating specialized maintenance, test, and fusion splicing equipment.
- Skill in interpreting test results.
- Knowledge of loss measurement.
- Document splicing information for city personnel.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Skill in working with the public at customers’ homes and large corporate settings.
- Skill in operating bucket trucks.
- Pass a basic technician installation exam.
- Work safely from heights.
- Work comfortably and effectively with the public.
- Work is typically performed outdoors, possibly in cold or inclement weather, while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. Indoor work also required.
- Exposure to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and irritating chemicals.
- Splicing may occur in confined space trailers or similar areas.
- Work near busy city, state, or federal streets and highways.
- Use of protective equipment such as masks, goggles, and gloves required.
- Frequent lifting of light and heavy objects, ladder climbing, tool use requiring dexterity, and color discrimination.
- Work on both aerial and buried facilities.
