Fiber Technician – Job Summary
Primary responsibilities include maintenance and repair of a GPON/XGS-PON system. Splicing fiber optic cables in both outdoor and indoor settings, reading and maintaining splicing schematics and diagrams, managing outside plant (OSP) activities at and around the assigned work site(s), maintaining accurate splicing and field notes. The majority of tasks occur in the field and may require overtime, including evening and night shifts, weekends, holidays and on‑call rotation.
EssentialJob Functions
- Diagnose and repair impairments within the fiber network.
- Contribute to design and installation/activation of point-to-point CWDM, DWDM as needed.
- Splice fiber optic cables (loose-tube and ribbon). Reconstruct splice cases (grounding, bonding, isolation, slack storage, sealing).
- Maintain records, schematics and diagrams.
- Operate OTDR, PON meter, Fiber Scope and other test equipment.
- Follow industry standards, safety procedures, and project instructions.
- Prepare field notes, interpret buried and aerial telecom facilities.
- Enter and keep outside plant records.
- Participate in permitting and construction processes.
- Maintain accurate paperwork (work orders, daily logs).
- Clean and maintain equipment and assigned vehicle.
- Assist with installation, service calls and escalations as needed.
- Knowledge of fiber PON/XGS-PON design techniques.
- Experience with fusion splicing both loose-tube and ribbon fiber optic cables, including mid-sheath splices.
- Working knowledge of current computerized operations.
- Proficiency with Microsoft applications.
- Ability to work with clients and/or customer contacts regarding best maintenance and construction practices.
- Strong attention to detail and decision‑making skills.
- Ability to multitask and stay organized under pressure.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Minimum 1 year experience in outside plant construction.
- Minimum 2 years experience in fiber optic cable splicing and maintenance.
- Strong computer skills with Microsoft applications.
- In‑depth understanding of technology‑based services, products and networking.
Skills and Abilities
- Accurately measure distances using tapes or other devices.
- Adhere to local, federal regulations and company policies.
- Carry, climb, and operate extension ladders (approx. 32 ft high, 75 lb).
- Operate aerial lift equipment (350 lb capacity).
- Identify different sizes and colors of wires.
- Drive company vehicle safely.
- Make cable connections in tight spaces by bending, reaching, twisting.
- Operate computer or test equipment associated with the position.
- Perform jobs from high places (poles, roofs).
- Prioritize and organize effectively.
- Use a variety of hand tools.
