General DescriptionThe purpose of this position is to provide minor maintenance, repair, modification, installation and construction of County facilities and equipment, building and grounds maintenance. This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Responsibilities- Performs a broad range of skilled and non-skilled trades including carpentry and/or painting, custodial and grounds maintenance, mechanical and related tasks.
- Identifies problems, determines solutions and/or repair needs and performs necessary work.
- Replaces fan belts, motors, switches and other defective parts and equipment.
- Assists with providing cost estimates for repairs, installations and maintenance.
- Completes office moves and/or transports furniture to department offices.
- Provides ground maintenance of County buildings.
- Operates vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Orders and transports materials and supplies.
- Installs and repairs street signs, rain gutters.
- Removes and hauls trash, moves furniture and equipment.
- Performs related work as assigned.
- General knowledge of the materials, equipment and tools used to assist in the repair and maintenance of grounds.
- Ability to acquire knowledge within a reasonable time period of the methods and techniques of a standard trade.
- Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
- Ability to operate motorized equipment, hand brushes and spray guns and mowers in a safe manner.
- Be in good physical condition.
- High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
- One (1) year of experience in the repair, construction or maintenance of equipment and/or facilities or related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
- Involves routine and frequent exposure to bright/dim light; dusts and pollen.
- Extreme heat and/or cold; wet or humid conditions.
- Vibration; fumes and/or noxious odors.
- Traffic; moving machinery.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
- Some positions may require a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License.
May be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and emergencies (man-made or natural) to meet the business needs of Durham County.
