Job Summary:

Performs skilled substation construction, maintenance, inspection, testing, repair, troubleshooting, commissioning support, and acceptance testing with limited supervision. Substation Technician II is an experienced field technician expected to independently execute assigned work, safely install and maintain substation equipment, exercise sound judgment during switching and clearance activities, and assist in the development of Technician I personnel.

Principal Duties:
  • Independently perform assigned substation construction, maintenance, inspection, repair, installation, replacement, modification, testing, and commissioning support activities.
  • Safely perform substation construction activities including equipment installation, removal, rigging, hoisting, alignment, and material handling using approved equipment and work practices.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on transformers, breakers, regulators, reclosers, capacitor banks, switches, batteries, chargers, control cabinets, and associated equipment.
  • Install, terminate, test, and troubleshoot AC, DC, control, communication, and fiber‑optic cabling systems.
  • Assist Controls Technician with SCADA and communications work including wiring, fiber terminations, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Apply knowledge of substation layouts, equipment operation, and power flow to safely perform construction, maintenance, switching, troubleshooting, and restoration activities.
  • Read and interpret one‑line diagrams, construction drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, and related technical documentation.
  • Use electrical measurement devices (voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters) and applicable diagnostic tools safely and accurately to evaluate substation apparatus.
  • Troubleshoot substation apparatus, control systems, communications, wiring, and field installation issues within training, authorization, and demonstrated competency.
  • Participate in switching, clearance, equipment isolation, and restoration activities when trained, authorized, and assigned.
  • Respond to outages and emergency conditions as required.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members, communicate clearly with coworkers and supervisors, and perform tasks independently when required.
  • Perform and enforce work in accordance with company safety policies and procedures; maintain required certification in first aid and CPR.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or management.
Education and Requirements:
  • High School education
  • NC CDL required
  • Job training 5‑7 years
