The Building Inspector reports to the Planning Director.

Receives applications for permits for new construction, reconstruction and demolitions; the Building Inspector reviews site plans, blueprints, and specifications and advises contractors in interpreting and applying code regulations and ensures that contractors meet state requirements. Inspects construction in progress for compliance with building, electrical, plumbing, and / or mechanical and fire codes; assures possession of correct permits; authorizes issuance of permits and Certificates of Occupancy.

Building Inspectors also notifies responsible parties of defects and re-inspects to determine if corrective actions have been taken; issues stop orders if necessary; proactively patrols the Town looking for violations of codes and responds to complaints; conducts inspections supporting other Town functions as needed, such as dilapidated structures, signs, lot setbacks and other zoning requirements, and issues enforcement orders when needed;

maintains accurate records, logs and files of inspections activities; completes reports of activities; manages citizen complaints about contractors, construction quality and other issues.

The new Building Inspector must display excellent customer service to our citizens, have thorough knowledge of State building codes and local codes and ordinances, have working knowledge of construction and system installation procedures in electricity, plumbing, heating, and air conditioning systems, and be skilled in the interpretation of codes and ordinances and their application to specific situations. The new building Inspector must also have the ability to read and analyze single family and commercial building plans and specifications and determine compliance with codes, the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors and the public, and the ability to enforce regulations tactfully and firmly and in a consistent manner.

Graduation from high school, supplemented by trade school course work in the building construction trades, and considerable experience in construction trades or trades inspection work; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Certification in Building, Electrical, Mechanical, and Plumbing trades at Level I, or Level II minimum. Level III preferred.

The starting salary is dependent upon qualifications and is expected to be in the $68,632 - $98,830 range. The starting salary for Level I is expected to be near the minimum, and Level’s II and III will be in the mid and higher portion of the range. The Town offers a generous employee benefits package.
