OVERVIEW & PURPOSE
This position performs skilled equipment mechanic work for the County. Conducts preventive maintenance and repairs on a wide variety of automotive vehicles, trailers, light and heavy equipment and marine equipment. Work includes the repair of gasoline and diesel engines, motors, brakes, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, transmissions, tires, minor body work, etc. The employee exercises judgment in diagnosing malfunctions of vehicles and equipment and determining necessary repairs.
Employee is subject to standby and call back work. Employee is also subject to hazards of automotive mechanics including working in both inside and outside environments, and exposure to various hazards such as noise, vibrations, moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, dusts, mists, fumes, odors, and oil. Employee is subject to bodily hazard fluids while performing some duties. Must be able to communicate with other Departments and businesses.
Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated through observation while in progress and inspected upon completion.
Performs preventive maintenance and repair on a variety of vehicles, small motors, trailers and heavy equipment.
Replaces or disassembles engines and transmissions, makes necessary repairs and adjustments, replaces worn or defective parts.
Performs scheduled preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment such as tune-ups, checking lights, tires, oil changes, brake linings, wiper blades, horns, suspensions, etc.
Operates equipment such as lift jacks, tire changers, air guns, battery chargers, wrenches, cranes, air compressors, welding units, hand tools, etc.
Lubricates, repairs and replaces parts and filters; cleans and replaces spark plugs, installs radiator hoses, and replaces belts; installs air conditioning compressor, etc.
Changes, repairs and replaces tires; replaces and checks brakes, replaces hoses, etc.
Performs work on electrical, exhaust, transmission, brake, and hydraulic systems.
Provides estimates for large repair jobs.
Work with insurance companies and body shops for wrecked vehicles.
Transport vehicles to and from different departments and businesses for repair needs.
Perform surplus duties of removing department related items and returning vehicles as close as possible to factory. Perform paperwork for surplus. Assist Surplus in needed help on departments surplus listings.
Install, Repair and Replace aftermarket department needed accessories. Lights, computer stands, inverters, sirens, etc.
Perform heating and cooling services on vehicles.
Order parts and items needed to service and repair vehicles.
Perform emergency roadside services. Lockouts, flat tires, out of gas, no starts, etc.
Perform minor body repairs
Be able to communicate with other departments and businesses.
Use variety of vehicle scan tools.
Performs welding to repair or fabricate parts.
Performs NC Vehicle Inspections.
Prepares simple records of work activities.
Drive and operate a Rollback and Wrecker on many different roadways and off the road.
24/7 On-Call Service performed in County, State and surrounding areas.
Clean Facility and Vehicles as needed.
Diagnosis, Installation, Repair and Removal of job-related equipment.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONSPerforms related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIESConsiderable knowledge of the methods, tools, parts and equipment used in the repair of light automotive passenger cars, trucks, and heavy construction and maintenance equipment.
Considerable knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine operation and repair.
Considerable knowledge of electrical, hydraulic, air conditioning, vacuum, and brake systems.
Working knowledge of safety hazards and precautions related to the work.
