DSS (Social Services Department) ResponsibilitiesIncumbents are responsible for the total process of determining applicant/client eligibility within Food and Nutrition Services. This includes performing eligibility determination and redetermination functions, applying in-depth knowledge of the Food & Nutrition Program, and functioning independently to execute complex tasks. The incumbent prepares and presents evidence for local and state appeal hearings and may be assigned additional duties in other program work areas as needed.
Knowledge,Skills, and Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of NC FAST and Social Service programs.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret rules, regulations, and procedures.
- Ability to research, analyze, and interpret automated system problems.
- Ability to communicate with clients/applicants, the public at large, and public officials to obtain data and explain rules and regulations.
- Ability to perform caseworker functions within structured time frames.
- Ability to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks.
Requires two years of experience as an Income Maintenance Caseworker; a degree from an accredited college or university; or an associate’s degree in accounting, business administration, human services, secretarial science or a closely related field and at least two years of paraprofessional, clerical or other public contact experience that includes negotiating, interviewing, obtaining, analyzing, and evaluating data; or a high school diploma and at least five years of paraprofessional, clerical or other public contact experience that includes negotiating, interviewing, obtaining, analyzing, and evaluating data.
PreferredRequirements
- A minimum of three or more years direct experience in Food and Nutrition Services program.
- A minimum of three or more years of Department of Social Services experience.
- NC Fast Core and FNS Level One Certification.
