Key Responsibilities
  • Pre-Procedure Preparation:
    Prepare the cath lab environment for procedures by ensuring all necessary equipment and tools are sterile, functional, and properly set up (e.g., catheters, guide wires, contrast agents, X-ray machines). Verify patient information, including medical history, allergies, and consent forms, before the procedure begins. Assist in the preparation of patients and set up monitoring equipment and positioning for optimal procedure results. Provide patient education and reassurance before the procedure, explaining what will happen and answering questions.
  • Assisting with Procedures:
    Assist cardiologists and other physicians during cardiac catheterization, angioplasty, stent placement, electrophysiological studies, and other interventional procedures. Handle sterile instruments (catheters, balloons, stents) and maintain a sterile field. Operate X-ray fluoroscopy equipment and assist with imaging during diagnostic tests (e.g., angiograms). Monitor vital signs and report abnormalities. Administer medications under physician direction (e.g., sedatives or contrast dyes) ensuring patient safety.
  • Post-Procedure Care:
    Monitor patients for immediate complications, assist in transferring patients to recovery, and support post-procedure recovery including monitoring cardiac rhythm and insertion sites for complications. Provide post-procedure instructions to patients and families.
  • Equipment Management and Maintenance:
    Maintain, clean, and sterilize cath lab equipment, check machinery (X-ray, EKG, defibrillators, monitors), order supplies, manage inventory, and calibrate equipment as needed.
  • Patient Monitoring and Safety:
    Continuously monitor vital signs during procedures, document information in the electronic health record (EHR) or procedure logs, adhere to PPE, sterile techniques, and radiation safety protocols. Monitor catheter insertion sites for signs of complications.
  • Collaboration with Medical Team:
    Work with cardiologists, radiologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. Attend pre-procedure meetings and assist in evaluating diagnostic test results to support treatment plans.
  • Education and Training:
    Stay up to date with advances in cardiac catheterization techniques and equipment. Participate in ongoing education and training (e.g., radiation safety, ACLS, and related certifications). Educate patients and assist in training new staff or students in the cath lab.
  • Quality Control and Compliance:
    Adhere to regulatory guidelines (HIPAA, OSHA, Joint Commission). Ensure procedures and documentation meet hospital policies and accreditation standards. Participate in regular performance audits.
