The Impact You Will Have

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota is hiring an Actuary to support actuarial reserving and forecasting. This role is at the intersection of traditional actuarial practice and modern predictive analytics. In this role, the candidate will expand their knowledge of Blue Cross’s reserving practices and loss analytics methodologies, gain insight into key challenges and opportunities within our actuarial and reserving functions, and apply advanced industry techniques to evaluate healthcare claim liabilities.

The position also includes responsibilities related to predictive modeling, supporting the development and enhancement of models that inform reserving, forecasting, and broader actuarial decision‑making. This role contributes directly to the accuracy, transparency, and innovation of Blue Cross’s financial insights, while offering exposure to emerging tools and collaboration with external partners to shape the future of actuarial analytics.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate has at least five years of IBNR actuary experience, an ASA designation, and a strong background in statistical analysis work. This role requires healthcare industry experience, particularly working with medical and claims data, along with hands‑on expertise in advanced programming and analytics, including SQL, R, SAS, and at least two years of advanced Python development. Experience creating clear, impactful reporting using Power BI or similar visualization tools is essential, along with strong communication skills and proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Responsibilities
  • Research, analyze and interpret actuarial and statistical data and provide technical assistance to other departments. This includes identifying issues to be researched, determining affected areas, estimating the impact and leading the resolution.
  • Develop mathematical models in connection with other departments to predict impact of proposed changes. May also be involved in the design of these models.
  • Understand/interpret the financial impact of decisions made by retrieving and analyzing claim costs, revenue and/or other relevant data. Participate in the design and implementation of new products and system enhancements by providing data and recommendations to assist in evaluating the impact of proposed benefit, system or process changes.
  • Responsible for divisional representation on corporate projects and may have leadership roles on these teams. Independently manage, which may include directing other staff, the retrieval and analysis of data on multiple tasks or projects with little or no management involvement.
  • Act as a resource for other members of the department/division on business issues and may be responsible for training and guidance of Actuarial support personnel or Analysts. Makes satisfactory progress according to the Actuarial Student Program guidelines.

Required Skills and Experience
  • 5+ years of related professional experience. All relevant experience including work, education, transferable skills, and military experience will be considered.
  • ASA or above.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent PC skills. Knowledge of data retrieval languages.
  • Knowledge of BCBSM databases or industry knowledge.
  • High school diploma (or equivalency) and legal authorization to work in the U.S.
Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • FSA strongly preferred.
  • MAAA strongly preferred.
  • Proven experience building predictive models using Python.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively present IBNR findings and insights to executive leadership.
