About DOPE Marketing

DOPE Marketing is a direct mail automation platform serving thousands of home service businesses across the United States. We’ve grown from a startup to a $28M+ revenue company in just over six years by building technology that makes direct mail as easy as running a digital ad. Our platform combines data-driven targeting, automated campaign management, and a full-service print and mail operation — all accessible through software our clients use every day.

The Role

We’re hiring an experienced Financial Controller to own the financial operations of a $28M+ business. This is a hands‑on execution role — not a CFO seat — but it carries real ownership, direct visibility into company performance, and a clear growth path as DOPE scales. You will manage accounts payable and receivable, maintain financial records, lead monthly close, and produce clean, user‑friendly reporting that helps leadership make fast, informed decisions.

You’ll work alongside our internal financial advisory team and external bookkeeping partners. Your job is to make sure the machine runs: bills paid on time, numbers accurate, close completed in the first five to seven business days of the month, and nothing falling through the cracks. You will be the operator who keeps the financial engine humming.

What You Will Own
  • Accounts payable and receivable — managing all vendor payments, client billing, and collections
  • Monthly close — completing the full close cycle within the first 5–7 business days of each month
  • Weekly and monthly financial reporting — designing and producing clear, user‑friendly reports for leadership review
  • Bank and credit card reconciliation across multiple accounts
  • Light financial analysis — identifying trends, flagging anomalies, and delivering actionable insights
  • Expense tracking and budget monitoring — ensuring spending stays within approved guidelines
  • Coordination with external bookkeeping team and financial advisors on month‑end close
  • Maintaining clean, organized financial records in our accounting systems
  • Supporting debt management tracking and cash flow monitoring
  • Building and continuously improving automated, paperless financial processes
What We’re Looking For Experience (Required)
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, with meaningful time in a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Accounting Manager role
  • Prior experience as a staff accountant or senior accountant before stepping into a controller‑level role — you know the basics cold
  • Demonstrated history of stability: we look for candidates with sustained tenure at each employer; a pattern of short stays (under 3 years) at multiple companies is not a fit for this role
  • Experience working across a mix of business sizes — mid‑market and larger companies, or a blend of private and corporate environments — preferred
  • Audit experience is a strong plus; candidates who have navigated audits understand the documentation and discipline required to pass one
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required — not Finance (accounting degrees train for managing books and controller functions; finance degrees are oriented toward investing and banking)
  • CPA preferred, but not required for candidates with the right experience and track record
Technical Skills
  • Advanced Excel proficiency — you use it all day, every day, and you’re fast and accurate in it
  • Strong preference for candidates who run lean, automated, and paperless operations — not high‑volume printing or heavily manual processes
  • Familiarity with AI tools and how to apply them to financial workflows is a meaningful plus
  • Experience with accrual‑based accounting and solid working knowledge of GAAP
Reporting & Communication
  • Experience designing original financial reports — not just updating templates others built
  • Ability to present financial information clearly to non‑finance leaders; you can translate numbers into decisions
  • History of meeting regularly with report users to make sure the data is understood and actionable
Work Style
  • Highly organized and detail‑oriented — you catch errors before they become…
