PositionSummary
Serves as a firefighter as defined by the State of Minnesota and is responsible for the overall operation, administration, and leadership of the Eagan Fire Department. Ensures protection of life and property through firefighting, training, emergency medical care, rescue, disaster response, fire prevention, inspection and investigation, and public education. Serves on the City’s leadership team and collaborates with the City Council and departments on strategy, policy, and service delivery.

- Plans, directs, and manages Fire Department operations including training, purchasing, and budgeting to provide effective community service.
- Develops, presents, and administers the annual department budget to meet operational needs.
- Pursues alternative funding to offset capital, technology, facility, and operating costs.
- Oversees fire inspections of existing facilities and coordinates with Community Development to ensure fire code compliance.
- Recommends construction, acquisition, or remodeling of facilities and apparatus.
- Commands large-scale emergency incidents and coordinates multi-jurisdictional responses.
- Assumes command at emergency scenes and directs operations through subordinate officers.
- Maintains continuous department operations; available 24/7 via various communication methods.
- Coordinates with County and State agencies on homeland security and emergency response issues.
- Oversees recruitment, hiring, training, evaluation, and discipline of all Fire Department personnel in accordance with City and department policies.
- Promotes community relations through fire prevention, education, and public awareness programs.
- Bachelor’s degree in Management, Fire Science, Public Administration, or closely related field.
- Six years of leadership and supervisory experience at the rank of Battalion Chief, Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief, and/or Chief for a comparable fire department.
- Licensed Minnesota firefighter or eligible to be licensed within six months.
- Twelve years of experience as a firefighter.
- Proof of Minnesota or equivalent certification in:
- Firefighter II
- Hazardous Materials Operations
- Fire Officer
- Completion of ten or more State or National fire-related training courses within the past five years.
- Executive Fire Officer (EFO) Certification.
- Current Blue Card Incident Command certification or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
- Must have excellent driving record and valid Minnesota driver’s license or able to obtain Minnesota license.
- Master’s Degree in Public Administration, Business Administration or related field.
- Experience as a Fire Chief.
- Suburban background in a mid to large size community. Understanding of metro and suburban issues.
