Project Engineer

The Project Engineer will support major construction projects, providing comprehensive project management support to project managers and field teams. This role focuses on effective communication, scheduling, tracking, document control, and cost forecasting to help deliver high-quality, profitable mechanical and plumbing projects in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities
  • Track, forecast, and report labor hours and material costs to support accurate project financials and profitability.
  • Assist in the buyout and procurement process for major equipment and subcontracts, ensuring timely and cost-effective purchasing.
  • Expedite and track deliveries of major equipment and materials to keep the project on schedule.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of general conditions, scope of work, and project specifications for contracts and subcontracts.
  • Maintain and control project documents in compliance with internal standards and contractual requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with field labor supervision to plan, organize, and schedule project work, including preparation of integrated subcontract and contract project schedules.
  • Review contract drawings, detail drawings, and specifications to understand project requirements and identify potential issues.
  • Prepare fabrication shop work packages, including detail drawing review, material take-offs, buyout lists, and man-hour fabrication budgets.
  • Support and collaborate with superintendents, forepersons, engineers, detailers, and management to deliver quality and profitable projects.
  • Ensure full compliance with the safety program at the jobsite and promote a strong safety culture.
  • Maintain regular attendance and promptness to support project and team needs.
  • Use project management and construction software tools such as MS Outlook, Excel, Word, Bluebeam, Smartsheet, One Drive, MS Teams, SharePoint, Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC), Viewpoint Vista, Revit, and Stratus, with on-the-job training provided for many of these programs.
  • Develop a strong understanding of construction sequencing, particularly as it relates to mechanical and plumbing scopes of work.
  • Support the management of RFIs and change orders and read and interpret project plans related to mechanical scopes.
  • Contribute to estimation activities and overall construction management efforts as needed.
Essential Skills
  • Experience in project engineering within construction, preferably mechanical construction projects.
  • Knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, piping, and mechanical scopes of work in a construction environment.
  • Understanding of RFIs, change orders, and the ability to read and interpret project plans related to mechanical systems.
  • 1+ years of experience working as a project engineer overseeing HVAC, plumbing, or mechanical scopes of construction preferred; internship experience is acceptable.
  • Proficiency with MS Outlook, Excel, Word, Bluebeam, Smartsheet, One Drive, MS Teams, SharePoint, Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC), Viewpoint Vista, Revit, and Stratus, or willingness to learn these tools.
  • Strong construction management skills, including scheduling, tracking, and coordination of field activities.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with superintendents, forepersons, engineers, detailers, and management.
  • Attention to detail in document control, cost tracking, and compliance with contractual requirements.
  • Solid understanding of mechanical construction, industrial construction, and process piping concepts.
  • Ability to work onsite and support large-scale data center projects.

Skills & Qualifications
  • Degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Chemical Engineering is desired.
  • Previous construction field experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree.
  • Knowledge of Bluebeam and Procore is highly preferred.
  • Experience with mechanical, plumbing, and process piping in industrial or data center construction environments.
  • Background in scheduling and construction management for complex mechanical projects.
  • Interest in developing deeper expertise in mechanical construction and data center projects.
Work Environment

This role is based onsite at a hyperscale data center project in Utah, working closely with field teams in an active construction environment focused on mechanical and plumbing scopes. The work involves regular interaction with project managers, superintendents, forepersons, engineers, detailers, and other project stakeholders in a collaborative and close-knit setting.
