The Media Secondary Library Assistant supports the instructional program at the assigned secondary school. Duties include collection management, processing, circulation, inventory, maintenance, and inventory of library materials and textbooks. The role documents losses, implements age-appropriate programs, selects instructional items, and instructs students on proper use of Chromebooks and library resources.

Essential Functions
  • Assists teachers, students, and administrators by identifying resource materials and equipment for classroom and assignment use.
  • Conducts classes and activities to promote the use and enjoyment of literature and technology.
  • Establishes positive relationships with students to create a comfortable, safe, and supportive environment.
  • Evaluates books and periodicals for retention within the collection, repairing damaged books, recommending retirement, and ensuring availability.
  • Maintains materials inventory and collection of books, hardware/software, and media equipment, ensuring up-to-date references.
  • Monitors student activities within the Library Media Center to maintain a safe learning environment.
  • Operates media production equipment and systems, providing media production services.
  • Participates in unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, and other professional development.
  • Performs routine maintenance and operating checks on media equipment to ensure availability for school use.
  • Performs circulation activities, including check-in and check-out, preparing circulation counts, overdue lists, and other scheduling reports.
  • Prepares manual and electronic documents and reports such as collection statistics, scheduling reports, renewal information, overdue lists, textbook orders, fines, and costs.
  • Processes library books, periodicals, software, and related media materials, including barcoding, shelving, and reporting.
  • Processes new student library accounts and notifies of missing, damaged, or overdue items, securing reimbursement for losses.
  • Provides student enrichment experiences to encourage a love of reading and literacy.
  • Repairs books and materials to maintain availability, longevity, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Researches instructional materials and sources to support students in classroom assignments.
  • Responds to inquiries from students, staff, and parents regarding library resources and overdue fines.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
