Position: Emergency Communications Operator I
Description

Summary

Operates a multi-channel radio console and a multi-line telephone, while maintaining computer-aided dispatch systems and other computer systems for receiving, coordinating and disseminating instructions, yet non-critical information from various sources and maintaining radio contact with mobile/field police, fire, and life safety units to monitor response, progress and support.

Distinguishing Career Features

The Communications Operator I is the first and entry level within an emergency dispatching career path. Communications Operators I will serve as secondary call receiver, handling calls of a non-emergency, less acute nature and serving as backup to an Operator II when integrated services are required of the nature of the incident is acute. Advancement to Communications Operator II requires schooling as stated in the qualifications section and a minimum of 2 years as an Operator I or equivalent.

Advancement to Senior Communications Operator requires 3 years as an Operator II, qualifications and access to all law enforcement databases, and the ability to serve as a leader in an emergency operations center and trainer of other operators.

Requirements

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Answers non-emergency and low acuity-level incoming telephone calls, communicating with various callers to obtain complete information, determine the specific need for dispatching police, fire, towing, and/or medical response.
  • Learns and operates a computer-aided dispatch system, telephones, multi-channel radio, TDD (text telephone device for hearing/speech impaired), numerous computer databases and maps.
  • Learns and accesses law enforcement databases to retrieve information supporting other communications operator and police/fire/life safety services.
  • Assists with maintaining contact with field units and other emergency service providers, and the general public to obtain and disseminate information.
  • Retrieves information from automated files to respond to queries from a variety of sources by typing correct password keys, information masks or special alpha number string formats on computer strings.
  • Inputs, updates, requests, transmits and queries information from a variety of sources to maintain current accurate records or to access databases for information, wants and warrant checks, intelligence, and/or driver license and vehicle registration checks by typing on a computer keyboard.
  • Reads/interprets maps for the public, field personnel, and other public safety agencies in order to assist in locating certain geographical areas using a state map, atlas, city and county maps, and various computer mapping systems.
  • Interprets telephone or radio call locations from maps by applying knowledge of local highway system and geography in order to provide appropriate and timely assistance.
  • Performs other duties as required to accomplish the objectives of the position.
