Tax Manager

About the Opportunity

The Tax Manager is a key contributor to the company’s tax function, supporting a publicly traded environment with complex multi‑state operations. The position owns income tax compliance, tax provision (ASC 740), and indirect taxes including sales/use, gross receipts, and property tax. It serves as a cross‑functional partner to operations, accounting, finance, internal audit, legal, and treasury teams, leads, mentors, and develops tax team members, and drives process improvements through technology and automation.

The role thrives in an acquisitive and jurisdictionally expanding business environment.

Responsibilities
  • Own and prepare quarterly and annual US tax provisions in accordance with US GAAP/ASC 740 and perform required SOX control procedures.
  • Prepare book tax difference work papers including mergers and acquisition analysis, stock‑based compensation, and 162(m) analysis.
  • Review book tax difference work papers for depreciation/amortization and other permanent and deferred tax items, and prepare trend analysis and identify tax rate drivers and variances.
  • Review income tax journal entries, account reconciliations, and prepare uncertain tax position memos as well as tax financial statement disclosures.
  • Respond promptly to all internal and external auditor requests.
  • Oversee multi‑jurisdictional compliance including nexus, apportionment, filing requirements across a growing entity structure.
  • Prepare or first review income tax returns including Consolidated 1120, 1065s, multistate reporting, and tax credit calculations.
  • Manage external tax service providers; ensure quality, timelines, and completeness.
  • Review and maintain tax fixed assets and quarterly US tax estimates.
  • Review and draft responses to income tax authority IDRs and notices; support audits by tax authorities.
  • Review, file, and ensure compliance with monthly, quarterly, and annual gross receipts, sales and use, and personal property tax returns.
  • Analyze new vendors, new laws, and new entities for use tax applicability and review indirect tax accruals and reconciliations.
  • Communicate financial and P&L impacts of indirect taxes to business partners.
  • Identify and mitigate indirect tax risks proactively.
  • Lead initiatives to modernize and scale the tax function through automation and technology; evaluate and implement tax tools, data analytics, and AI solutions.
  • Improve data integrity, reporting speed, and overall efficiency, standardize and document processes to support scalable growth and audit readiness.
  • Drive continuous improvement mindset across the tax team.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Tax required; CPA preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in tax public accounting or Fortune 500 experience preferred.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Demonstrated expertise as a senior tax analyst, including strong expertise in income tax, ASC 740, and multi‑state taxation.
  • Advanced analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Strong proficiency in Excel, data analytics, and tax technology tools.
  • Ability to lead through complexity and ambiguity.
  • Proven project management and prioritization skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to influence senior stakeholders.
  • Track record of developing talent and building high‑performing teams.
  • Operates independently with accountability for outcomes, not just deliverables.
  • Anticipates issues and drives solutions proactively; seeks input to understand problems before prescribing solutions.
  • Balances technical excellence with business practicality.
