EssentialDuties
Under direction, inspects buildings and structures in all stages of construction, alteration or repair to enforce all related building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, energy conservation and disabled access regulations.
Typical Duties- Conduct field inspections of building construction, mechanical, plumbing or electrical installations to ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances and regulations
- Maintain records and approve compliant structures and installations
- Prepare written notices summarizing violations and identifying applicable code sections
- Perform minor plan reviews for compliance with applicable codes and ordinances
- Provide building code information to the public
Education and experience:
Equivalent to graduation from high school and at least one year of experience in conducting inspections and/or enforcements.
- Must possess and maintain a One and Two Family Dwelling Inspection Certificate from the International Code Council (I.C.C.).
- Must possess a valid California Driver’s License. An acceptable 10-year driving history DMV report (H6), issued within 3 months of posting date, will be required and evaluated prior to appointment to the position.
- I.C.C. Building Inspection Certificate
- Fluency in English and Spanish, Vietnamese, or Korean.
Building materials and modern methods of construction;
California state building, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing codes;
California energy and disabled access regulations; the principles of construction and types of materials used in electrical, mechanical, and plumbing installations; basic electrical wiring techniques for residential projects; and effective customer service techniques and principles.
Understand provisions of applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations; apply technical knowledge and use sound inspection methods to evaluate construction with approved plans and specifications and for inconsistencies with applicable codes; read and interpret diagrams, plans and specifications; perform arithmetical computations rapidly and accurately; communicate effectively; work effectively, tactfully and courteously with owners, tenants, contractors, the public, other agencies, and City staff;
commit to providing quality customer service; and safely perform the physical demands of the job.
Incumbents in this classification stand, walk, climb, simultaneously use their arms and legs, speak clearly, hear normal voice conversation, distinguish shades/color vision, see small details, use a telephone and drive a vehicle.
Benefits- After certification, employees are eligible for pay for the use of their Spanish, Vietnamese, or Korean bilingual skills.
- Part‑time employees participate in a deferred compensation package; payroll retirement payments of 7.5% will be deducted from their pay and placed in a deferred compensation account. If the employee works in excess of 1,000 hours within a single fiscal year, the employee must then enroll in the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).
- Employees receive sick leave time in accordance with the California Health Workplace Healthy Family Act (AB1522).
