Job Title

Maintenance Technician

Job Description

Under close supervision (Technician I), supervision (Technician II), and general supervision (Technician III) of the Public Works Director, performs a variety of maintenance to property, pathways, and facilities. Duties require work be completed courteously, safely, and efficiently. Duties often require work on weekends, evenings, and occasionally on holidays, and will be performed in all weather conditions. Work may involve some interaction with the public (all levels) and with outside vendors and contractors (Technician III).

Technician

I

Performs facility, park shelter, playground, restroom, and grounds general site cleanup, janitorial, maintenance, and improvement tasks.

  • Pruning
  • Weeding
  • Aerating
  • Thatching
  • Snow removal and de-icing
  • Raking
  • Sweeping
  • Clears obstructions and debris on trails and roadsides.
  • Assists with irrigation monitoring, adjustments, and repairs.
  • Assists with maintenance and weed control within pathways, easements, or City property.
  • Maintains and prepares fields for athletic events i.e., baseball, softball, soccer, etc.
  • Operates power tools and various landscaping equipment, if age 21 or over, may operate City trucks.
  • Provides information and directions to the general public in a professional manner, as needed.
  • Waters all City-owned flower baskets and planters during the proper seasons.
  • Installs banners and seasonal lighting.
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.
  • Performs event set-up, support, and tear down, as needed.
Technician II

Performs all duties of Technician I and:

  • Provides direction for, and is responsible for, the full range of ground maintenance tasks.
  • Applies chemicals/fertilizer to vegetation and sprays for pests.
  • Performs routine maintenance on irrigation, filtration, and pump systems.
  • Monitors supplies inventory and submits to supervisor for re-order.
  • Perform routine maintenance of tools and machinery, including mowers, weed eaters, and blowers.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on parks and playground equipment.
  • Operates City trucks, power tools, and various landscaping equipment safely.
  • Keeps records on tasks performed as directed.
Technician III

Performs all duties of Technician I and II and:

  • Serves as a lead to Technician I and II staff, providing mentoring and guidance; may delegate and oversee work processes.
  • At the direction of department leadership, leads and implements maintenance and improvements of City-owned properties.
  • Purchases supplies and obtains bids and quotes while adhering to City procedures, at supervisor's direction.
  • Assists supervisor in the identification and planning of short- and long-term projects.
  • At the direction of the supervisor, identifies and implements training and development for Technician I and II staff.
  • Oversees application of chemicals/fertilizers.
  • Coordinates and oversees volunteer projects.
Additional Functions
  • Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Required

  • General mechanical knowledge e.g., small engine repair, changing oil and filters, basic systems troubleshooting.
  • Understanding of maintenance practices, e.g., filter and lightbulb replacement, painting, basic plumbing adjustments.
  • Ability to safely use power tools, e.g., string trimmer, backpack blower, edger, push mower, and hand power tools.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, e.g., shovel, screwdriver, saw, hammer, ratchet, and similar tools.
  • Ability to operate mowing equipment, a pickup truck, and utility vehicles.
  • Must be available for on-call, holiday, weekend work, and special events.
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment and computer programs. Specific skill in use of MS Office Suite, particularly Outlook, and department-specific software.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to apply tact and good judgment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, officials, and co-workers.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional when interacting with others.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Problem solving.
  • Basic math skills: add, subtract, multiply, divide.

Preferred

  • Ability to operate a mini excavator, skid steer, backhoe, dump truck, or forklift.
Qualifications and Education

Technician I

Minimum

  • Age 18 or older to operate power tools and machinery.
  • Age 21 or older to operate City vehicles.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Or any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the equivalent necessary for satisfactory job performance.
  • Legally authorized to work in the US.

Preferred

  • One (1) year relevant experience.

Technician II

Minimum

  • Age 18 or older to operate power tools and machinery.
  • Age 21 or older to operate City vehicles.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years' related experience.
  • Or any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the equivalent necessary for satisfactory job…
