Qualifications- Be at least 18 years of age, and able to read and write.
- A teacher who began employment in a licensed or approved child care center in South Carolina after June 30, 1994 must have at least a high school diploma or GED and a minimum of six months’ experience as a teacher in a licensed or approved child care facility. If a teacher or caregiver cannot obtain a high school diploma or GED because of a disability and otherwise is qualified, they must have at least a high school Certificate of Completion and six months’ experience.
- If a teacher/caregiver does not meet the experience requirements, they must be directly supervised for six months by a staff person with at least one year of teaching experience in a licensed or approved child care facility. Within six months of being employed, the teacher/caregiver must have six clock hours of training in child growth and development and early childhood education or continue to be under the supervision of a qualified teacher/caregiver.
- A teacher/caregiver with two years’ experience as a teacher/caregiver in a licensed or approved facility and employed as of July 1, 1994 is exempt from the high school diploma, GED, and Certificate of Completion requirements.
- A teacher/caregiver with an undergraduate degree from a state approved college or university in early childhood, child development, elementary education, or a related field may begin working immediately if they have 60 days’ field experience with children aged 0-8.
- A teacher/caregiver may be 17 years of age if they have received a GED or high school diploma and are continuously supervised by a qualified teacher/caregiver who is in the room at all times.
- Staff persons employed prior to the effective date of these revised regulations are not required to meet the current staff qualifications if the prior regulations’ qualifications are met. If a teacher/caregiver has had more than a twelve-month break in service, the new guidelines apply for re-employment.
Reports to the Childcare Director. Under supervision, provides supervised care for children birth to 5 years old. Staff members are charged with promoting creativity and independence through activities that address physical, social, cognitive, and emotional growth.
Essential Functions- Follows all federal, state, district, and DSS guidelines including management of required documentation and reporting.
- Performs all duties as assigned by the director.
- Exhibits positive behavior toward children, parents, staff, and administrators.
- Conducts oneself as a positive role model in the program and community.
- Supervises small groups of children, ensuring adequate active supervision at all times.
- Plans and prepares various indoor and outdoor activities for the assigned group, ensuring they are engaging, developmentally appropriate, and follow the SC Early Learning Standards.
- Assists in supervising and/or feeding children during meal times.
- Ensures each child leaves only with his or her parent or guardian, or by prior arrangement with a written permission on file.
- Ensures the building is secure and the areas used are clean after the program each day, sharing responsibility for overall school cleanliness and neatness.
- Attends required staff development training as scheduled by the director.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding children and their progress.
- Speaks to every child and parent upon arrival and departure of the center in a positive manner; interacts with children at all times.
- Serves as a positive voice to parents and the community regarding the SDPC Child Care program.
- Maintains proper sanitation when diapering.
- Maintains a folder containing current and pertinent data on each child.
