Job Description – General Maintenance Technician

Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Building Maintenance Foreperson or Director of Facilities Management or designee, the position is responsible for performing a wide variety of tasks and functions in one or more building trades (general building construction, electrical, plumbing, locks and keys, glazing, etc.) that involve the installation, inspection, repair, service, and maintenance of facilities, equipment, appliances, machinery, and related work to support operations to sustain district buildings, properties, and infrastructure.

Work Hours:

Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM or from 2:00 PM to 10:30 PM. Work days and/or hours are subject to change at management’s discretion to best support District needs.

General Maintenance Technician

Qualifications
  • Hold a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Have a minimum of six consecutive years of documented and proven work experience in general building construction including the provision of all material, labor, equipment (such as engineering vehicles and tools) and services necessary for the construction of projects. This experience shall immediately precede the application for this job description’s position.
  • Hold a valid driver’s New Jersey license with no serious infractions.

    Be able to find the root cause of issues and think logically about solutions.

    When diagnosing problems, think critically while repairing the issue.

    Skills:

    Be able to read blueprints and schematics and use an array of tools and diagnostic devices to service and install electrical parts.
  • Skills:

    Be able to perform single technical tasks and occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include operating equipment used in the repair and maintenance of facilities; planning and managing projects; preparing and maintaining accurate records; adhering to safety practices; and handling hazardous materials.
  • Knowledge:
    Be able to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include methods, techniques, materials, tools used in installation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of doors and door frames; windows, sashes, and frames; various floors including hardwood and vinyl;

    locks; roofing; ceilings and ceiling grids; sheet rook and spackle; minor electrical and plumbing not requiring a licensed electrician or licensed plumber; other component parts of buildings and furnishings; and blueprints and schematics.
  • Ability:
    Be able to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data;

    and utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; meeting deadlines and schedules;

    working as part of a team; working independently and with interruptions; and complying with OSHA/NJPEOSHA regulations.
  • Possess a thorough knowledge of the Uniform Construction Code for New Jersey.
  • Possess ability to work effectively and efficiently alone, and cooperatively with other personnel.
