POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general administrative direction of the Health Officer and Director, the Health Inspector is responsible for ensuring compliance with food, housing, and environmental code regulations, ordinances, and laws as they pertain to the health and welfare of the public, at the city, county, state, and federal levels.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conduct inspections of all food-related business operations, confirming city, state, and federal required compliance.
  • Conduct inspections of general business working conditions for occupational safety and OSHA standards.
  • Perform environmental inspections focusing on city, state, and federal agency regulations.
  • Provide comprehensive response to food, housing, and environmental complaints for the safety and well-being of residents.
  • Inspect and investigate foodborne illness outbreaks and/or food tampering in conjunction with other health divisions as necessary.
  • Works with other city department personnel to provide crucial information and/or support for the implementation of new businesses within the city.
  • Develop educational materials and/or programs to promote health, safety, and improvement through training/education sessions on a variety of sanitation topics and with any problematic food-related operations within the city.
  • Documents violations and issues citations for any infringement of regulations, ordinances, or laws under the Health Department's authority.
  • Testifies in court and at administrative hearings regarding violations and citations as necessary.
  • Helps to coordinate food-related segments of festivals and other necessary public events and monitors during such events.
  • Participates in in-service training programs related to revisions of the city, state, and federal regulations and their enforcement.
  • Organize and conduct meetings with business representatives to discuss such points as standards, cited violations, and potential hazards, and to resolve disputes regarding occupational safety issues.
  • Secures information and maintains confidentiality.
  • Follows the City of East Chicago policies and procedures.

Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and

regulations.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledgeable in the regulations, ordinances, and laws of the city, state, and federal government, including the Indiana State Board of Health, Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), U.S. Department of Agriculture, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
  • General knowledge of IT equipment and Microsoft Office programs with essential typing ability.
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to keep accurate records and files.
  • Capability to analyze a problem and develop a solution.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written).

Aptitude to work well with others (within the department, across the city department, with the

public).

  • Able to manage the physical demands of the position, including, but not limited to, lifting to 50 lbs., climbing flights of stairs and ladders, and extensive walking, as well as the ability to work in various extreme weather conditions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in food safety or environmental science
