Pay Range: $15.00/hour (Increases to $16.00/hour after 90 days)
Position SummaryThe Laborer position in the Public Works Department is responsible for performing a wide range of manual labor and maintenance duties related to building upkeep, grounds care, equipment maintenance, and public service. This role requires a valid driver’s license and the ability to be available for 24-hour on‑call duty based on the operational needs of the City of East Chicago.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Building Maintenance
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, and wax floors as needed
- Clean and disinfect restrooms and showers
- Wash windows, empty trash receptacles, and clean gutters
- Lawn Maintenance
- Mow lawns, trim shrubs and trees, and weed landscaping
- Apply mulch around plants and pick up debris on public properties
- Remove snow using blowers or shovels
- Install and remove seasonal/holiday decorations
- Equipment Preventive Maintenance
- Check fluid levels in equipment before use and replenish as necessary
- Clean equipment after use and perform minor repairs
- Report significant equipment issues to the Public Works Supervisor
- Public Service
- Interact with the public in a courteous, respectful, and professional manner
- Provide accurate information or direct inquiries to appropriate personnel
- Perform additional duties as assigned

- Collaborate effectively with fellow staff and other City departments
- Attend team meetings and contribute to problem‑solving initiatives
- Assist colleagues when needed and support a team‑first environment

Skills and Abilities

- Strong team‑oriented mindset and work ethic
- Must possess a valid driver’s license
- Physical ability to perform strenuous labor in varying weather conditions
This position may require duties outside of the outlined responsibilities on an as‑needed basis. Any recurring or time‑intensive additional duties will be formally reviewed and incorporated into the official job description where appropriate.
