The Medication Assistant (MA) serves as a caregiver who provides resident‑centered nursing care and daily living assistance to assigned residents under the supervision of a charge nurse.
Responsibilities include:
- Delivering age‑appropriate care based on the resident’s plan of care, including bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, and recording vital signs.
- Providing psycho‑social support and basic health care needs.
- Assisting residents with transfer techniques, walking, range‑of‑motion and passive exercises.
- Preparing food and creating a positive dining experience; assisting with meals and snacks.
- Administering prescribed medications as delegated by a licensed nurse and documenting outcomes related to resident care, medication administration, behavior, activity, and dietary.
- Collecting non‑invasive body fluid specimens and gathering vital signs.
- Performing housekeeping and laundry services to maintain clean living areas.
- Documenting and encouraging participation in wellness and recreational programs.
- Participating in departmental or organization committees and task forces as needed.
- High school graduate or GED preferred, but not required.
- Minimum age of 18 preferred.
- Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in long‑term care preferred.
- Completion of yearly department‑specific competency testing and maintenance of continuing education credits (minimum 12 hours annually).
- Maintenance of all required department‑specific certifications. Valid driver’s license and auto insurance may be required where applicable.
- State‑specific certification requirements:
- ** Iowa**:
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) with the State Board of Nursing; completion of a state‑approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistant course. - ** Minnesota**:
Nursing assistant certification, completion of a 75‑hour course, and registration with the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry; completion of a state‑approved Trained Medication Assistant course. - ** North Dakota**:
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) with the State Board of Nursing; completion of a state‑approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistant course. Additionally- Medication Assistant I certification required for Assisted Living or Basic Care facilities.
- Medication Assistant II certification required for skilled nursing facilities.
- ** South Dakota**:
State‑approved Certified Medication Aide (CMA) course and maintenance of CMA certification with the State Board of Nursing. - All Good Samaritan and Sanford nursing facilities:
State‑required certified/trained medication aide certification (CMA or TMA) and active certified nursing assistant registration in state of practice or ability to obtain within 120 days.
