Job Description

East Greenwich Public Schools seeks a highly qualified Special Education Teacher for a one‑year only position during the 2026‑2027 school year.

Must have proper certification with RIDE:
Middle/Secondary Special Education Teacher, Grades 7‑12 or Elementary/Middle Special Education Teacher, Grades K‑8.

The successful candidate will create a safe learning environment where all students are engaged in learning at their readiness level.

Responsibilities
  • Develops, plans, implements, and reviews structured Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) in accordance with state and federal regulations for all students on the teacher’s caseload.
  • Adheres to all timeline dates, procedures, necessary paperwork, classroom organization, and case management in accordance with state and federal regulations governing students with disabilities.
  • Supervises support staff within the classroom setting, maintains routines, lessons, and all programming for all students on the teacher’s caseload.
  • Designs, implements, and collects data on behavioral programs that are individualized for each student and provides research‑based behavioral interventions and social/emotional support to all students.
  • Effectively works with students who are experiencing mental health/behavioral issues across settings and communicates with support staff, building administration, and related service providers regarding these issues.
  • Utilizes de‑escalation strategies with students in moments of crisis and accurately and promptly reports all incidents of behavioral escalation to the building principal, necessary related service providers, support staff, and the parents.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills and works collaboratively with each student’s general education teacher, support staff, related service providers, and parents.
  • Serves as a case manager for all assigned students.
  • Provides ongoing communication to parents and other members of each student’s team regarding progress.
  • Develops and manages a schedule of teaching activities and maintains current student records, including day‑to‑day data related to learning and behavior.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding pupil status and student records unless disclosure serves professional purposes or is required by law.
  • Utilizes technology to facilitate student learning, such as web‑based educational programs and virtual learning programs.
  • Facilitates smooth student interactions across settings.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the building principal.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education.
  • Knowledge of or training in a crisis management curriculum such as Safety Care preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Capability to respond simultaneously to a variety of needs for students and staff while maintaining a high degree of sensitivity to individual needs.
  • Ability to interact with students, staff, and members of the community in a pleasing and positive manner.
  • Ability to effectively handle issues utilizing a personable problem‑solving approach.
  • Capable of working collegially with all levels of administration, staff, families, caregivers, and outside providers as needed; functions as a critical member of the de‑escalation team.
  • Ability to prioritize the needs and requests of students and staff within the school setting and respond in a professional and efficient manner.
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience preferred.
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
  • Technological proficiency in major computer software including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Publisher), Google Calendar, Google platform, SAMS and Aspen, and ability to learn operation of state assessment online testing software.
