Job Description

East Greenwich Public Schools is seeking applications for Substitute Paraprofessionals. Functions as part of the instructional team to assist the teacher in the achievement of classroom objectives. Assists teachers in the instruction and reinforcement of instruction of all students including those who have been identified with disabilities, individually and in small groups. Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.

May assist the teacher in the classroom in the review, make-up, or continuous learning activities for a student or small group of students according to procedures established by the teacher. May assist teacher in the instruction of students with identified disabilities. Provides routine clerical support to teachers. In accordance with the collective bargaining agreement, monitors and supervises students and/or continues lessons during short-term teacher absences.

Serves as the chief source of information and assistance to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher. Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information. Under the direction of the building principal supervises students during play periods, lunch periods, detention, and during student arrival and dismissal. Operates all office equipment as required. Assists the teacher in maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment.

Takes appropriate action when behavior becomes disruptive, uncontrollable, or harmful to the child or others. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the building principal.

Communication skills:
Strong oral and written communications skills. The capability of responding simultaneously to a variety of needs for students and staff while maintaining a high degree of sensitivity to individual needs. Interpersonal and problem solving skills:
Ability to interact with students, staff, and members of the community in a pleasing and positive manner. Ability to effectively handle issues utilizing a personable problem solving approach. Team based skills:
Capable of working collegially with all levels of administration and staff. Planning skills:
Ability to prioritize the needs and requests of students and teachers within the school setting and respond in a professional and efficient manner. Physical demands:
While performing this job the employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with assistance as necessary.

Job Requirements
  • Selected candidate will be required to have a current BCI with fingerprinting. Associate's Degree or higher with completed coursework evidencing Reading, Writing and Math Skills. Teacher Assistant certification preferred Safety Care Training preferred, but not required. Should have experience, and knowledge of how best to support children on the spectrum, be able to follow an inclusion plan, experience in a self-contained setting, and the ability to interact with several teachers and related service professions throughout the school day.
  • Associate degree preferred.

*** If selected to be on the substitute list, the following requirements must be presented in person to East Greenwich Public Schools: A copy of your Praxis certificate or Associate's degree A current national criminal background check with fingerprints A tuberculosis test with a negative result
** Proper identification for completion of an I-9: active passport, license and birth certificate or social security card.
** Prior to employment, each school employee shall file with the Superintendent of Schools, a report from a licensed physician that such person is free from tuberculosis based on a physical examination and negative Mantoux (PPD) tuberculin skin test.

PLEASE NOTE:

This application will be kept on file for the current school year ONLY. A new School Spring application, along with updated documentation MUST be submitted at the beginning of each school year to be active on our list.
