Welding & Brazing Manufacturing Engineer

Pratt & Whitney is seeking a highly skilled Welding & Brazing Manufacturing Engineer to lead and support advanced joining technologies, primarily for Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) operations, with additional support for Maintenance Repair Operations (MRO) activities. This role is ideal for an experienced technical leader who thrives in complex aerospace manufacturing environments and wants to help shape the future of turbine engine joining technologies.

You will work closely with cross-functional teams to develop, validate, and optimize welding and brazing processes critical to Pratt & Whitney's next-generation propulsion systems.

You will join the Manufacturing Processes and Advanced Technology (MPAT) group within the Operational Excellence Organization. This group is committed to sustaining and driving manufacturing improvements across the enterprise, including module centers, sites, functions, and the supply base. MPAT emphasizes continuous improvement through lean and Six Sigma methodologies, while promoting advanced manufacturing technologies, best practices, and strong process discipline.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for advanced brazing and welding processes across Pratt & Whitney's Core Manufacturing Engineering organization.
  • Collaborate with the Brazing & Welding Fellow to lead Joining Technologies Council initiatives, including co-leading meetings and improving standard work.
  • Develop, validate, and implement new welding and brazing technologies, including automated welding cells, furnace brazing systems, and modernization of joining processes.
  • Lead capital equipment projects from specification through installation and release to production.
  • Partner with internal sites and suppliers to create PFMEAs, control plans, and ensure Manufacturing Readiness Level (MRL) progression for high-risk joining operations.
  • Reduce scrap, rework, repairs, quality escapes, and Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ) through effective root cause analysis and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Support process investigations, technical escalations, and continuous improvement efforts in welding and brazing.
  • Participate in assessments of joining process capability, readiness, equipment health, and supplier capability, presenting results to stakeholders and leadership.
  • Develop and maintain processes for new product introductions, including First Article Inspection and control of manufacturing software.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including quality, design engineering, IPTs, operations, tool design, weld test lab, and NDT inspection.
  • Contribute to lean/CORE initiatives to improve efficiency, safety, and cost performance.
  • Develop curriculum and deliver training to enhance workforce capabilities and ensure knowledge transfer.
  • As needed develop, review, and maintain work instructions to align with operational standards and best practices.
What You Will Learn:
  • Advanced aerospace joining technologies, including laser welding, TIG/GTAW, electron beam welding, vacuum brazing, and induction brazing.
  • Best practices in heat-treat interactions, cleaning, metallurgy, automation, process control, and precision fixturing.
  • Hands-on problem solving in high-mix aerospace manufacturing and MRO environments.
  • Cross-functional collaboration across global supply chain, operations, and engineering teams.
  • Enterprise-wide Pratt & Whitney business processes, including the CORE Operating System, Leadership Operating Model, and cross-functional areas such as Material Control Labs, Engineering Support to Operations, Quality, and Engineering Source Approval.
Qualifications You Must Have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Materials, Welding Engineering, or related technical field.
  • 10+ years of experience in manufacturing engineering or shop operations.
  • 5+ years of aerospace experience in brazing, welding, or joining processes (TIG/GTAW, laser, electron beam, vacuum brazing, induction).
  • Experience programming or supporting automated joining systems, robotics, welding controls, or furnace controls.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
Qualifications We Prefer:
  • Advanced engineering degree (MS or PhD).
  • Experience with Lean, Six Sigma, ACE/CORE, Red X, SPC, and RCCA methodologies.
  • Familiarity with Siemens NX, CAD/CAM, 3D modeling, NC programming, and GD&T.
  • Experience with NDT techniques such as visual, FPI and X-ray inspection.
