Hot Section Engineering (HSE) Engineer
Pratt & Whitney is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines and auxiliary power systems and has been revolutionizing modern flight for over 100 years. Join us and help shape the future of aerospace and defense.
Hot Section Engineering (HSE) at Pratt & Whitney is looking for a motivated, ambitious individual to join our Hot Section Durability organization in our East Hartford, CT location. The Durability Discipline is highly specialized with particular focus on advanced cooling designs, aerodynamics, heat transfer, lifting, coatings, high-temperature aerospace alloys, and manufacturing. Durability Engineers are responsible for executing designs and thermal analyses of cooled and uncooled turbine airfoils and BOAS and performing life assessments of HPT hardware.
These analyses are necessary to support the design, development, validation, production implementation and management of advanced and operational engines flying across the globe. Engineers will support engineering tasks for various Integrated Program Deployment (IPD) phases including concept initiation and optimization, preliminary and detailed design, verification and validation, and in-service support.
What You Will Do
- Execute designs and thermal analyses of cooled turbine airfoils and BOAS to drive continuous improvement in durability part metrics and tools utilizing ESW/EKS with technical oversight of senior engineer.
- Perform heat transfer, fluid flow, and computational fluid dynamics analyses.
- Execute part life predictions using available field and engine test data, and continuously update life model for all customer regions and thrust ratings.
- Calibrate thermal analyses and part life estimates to engine test and field data.
- Assess manufacturing non-conformances, field limits and test engine hardware; includes hardware delivery, life predictions, test monitoring and post-test data collection.
- Active and engaged participant in an Integrated Product Team (IPT).
- Travel requirements up to 10%.
What You Will Learn
- This position is a part of our Engineering Development Program (EDP). EDP participants will complete three to four rotations to build technical breadth and leadership abilities before graduating from the program.
Qualifications You Must Have
- Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering obtained by start date.
- Experience with heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and finite element modeling
- Minimum 3.0 Cumulative GPA
Experience may be obtained through on-the-job experience, research, coursework, or projects.
Qualifications We Prefer
- Experience in applying heat transfer and fluid dynamics principles to engineering analyses and problem-solving.
- Experience in material science, including the application of statistics, lifting methodologies, and Weibull analysis.
- Experience with manufacturing processes such as investment casting; laser and Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) hole drilling; airflow processes; metallic and ceramic coatings; and ceramic matrix composite (CMC) processes
- Experience in airfoil lifting methodologies, including identifying and modeling failure modes (oxidation, creep, corrosion), and Thermo-Mechanical Fatigue (TMF) and performing mission-life modeling for airfoil-limiting conditions
- Experience in presenting information through written and verbal communication
