Position: School Social Worker (3 positions)

General Summary

In alignment with the established policies and procedures of the East Lansing Public School District, the School Social Worker is responsible for providing a problem-solving service to students, their families and school staff through individual, group, classroom, and community social work interventions.

About the Role
  • Provides individual, group, and classroom support to students.
  • Supports building and district-wide behavior initiatives.
  • Assists students in learning social skills and developing appropriate peer relations.
  • Collaborates with school staff.
  • Participates as a member of the district-wide Crisis Intervention Team and the ELPS Mental Health Advisory Committee.
  • Supports the implementation of a social-emotional identification, screening and referral process for elementary school students.
  • Provides social work evaluations and services to students suspected to have a disability or to special education students through the referral or Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team (MET).
  • Provides pre-referral consultation to teachers and administrators regarding students with behavioral and/or adjustment problems as needed.
  • Attends MET and Individualized Education Program Team (IEPT) meetings.
  • Oversees the implementation of 504 plans.
  • Education, Knowledge and Skills Required
  • Master’s degree from a graduate school of social work program approved by the State Board of Education.
  • Must have attained a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree with State of Michigan licensure.
  • Must have certificate with School Social Worker endorsement/license.
  • Demonstrated capabilities in report writing, evaluation, and interview procedures.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary group.
  • Ability to meet deadlines for reports, forms, and required paperwork.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional growth.
  • Ability and desire to work with a diverse student body with a commitment to providing a positive experience for students and their families regardless of race, culture, creed, religion, handicapping condition, social-economic status, gender.
