Safety Monitor
In alignment with the established policies and procedures of the East Lansing Public School District, the Safety Monitor is responsible for student supervision and monitoring of school grounds. This position may include responsibilities at extra-curricular/night events as assigned. The duties listed below are not intended to be all-inclusive; rather, they are representative of some of the primary responsibilities associated with this position.
Monitors student activity in all areas of campus, both inside and outside. Refers discipline, security, and attendance situations to appropriate personnel. Enforces all district policies and procedures related to safety and security. Assists in emergency situations. Assists visitors with directions, secures proper identification and escorts unauthorized visitors to exits. Monitors extracurricular events as assigned. Participates in in-services and workshops appropriate to responsibilities.
Monitors assigned zones and areas of school grounds. Consistently and politely enforces East Lansing High School handbook rules. Promotes a safe and healthy school environment by enforcing school rules and guidelines. Performs various tasks as requested by the administration and office personnel. Maintains confidentiality when dealing with students, families, staff, and community members. Performs moderate to extensive physical activity including frequent standing or walking.
Performs other duties as assigned.
High School Diploma/GED required Previous experience with school age students, preferred Ability to work independently, is organized and uses time effectively Shows initiative but is also willing to take direction Ability to physically manage potential student conflict Ability to remain calm under stressful situations and execute proper de-escalation strategies Ability to use/learn related technology tools (i.e., security cameras) Exhibit positive rapport with students, families, professional and support staff, and community Possesses strong interpersonal skills to develop collaborative relationships with students, colleagues, administrators, classroom teachers, support staff, and families Has the ability and desire to work with a diverse student population with a commitment to providing a positive experience for students and their families regardless of race, culture, creed, religion, handicapping condition, social-economic status, gender, sexuality and sexual identity
