General Summary

In alignment with the established policies and procedures of the East Lansing Public School District, the Student Advocate is responsible for providing guidance and advocacy to students to ensure they meet academic and behavioral requirements to move to the next grade level. Responsibilities include linking students and their families to school and community resources, monitoring attendance, academic and behavior data, and communicating with students, families, administration, classroom teachers and counselors.

The duties listed below are not intended to be all-inclusive; rather, they are representative of some of the primary responsibilities associated with this position.

About the Role

  • Communicates effectively and collaboratively with students, families, staff, and community partners to support strong school-family partnerships and positive student outcomes.
  • Works with district and school teams to support students exhibiting behavioral, social, emotional, academic, or attendance challenges that interfere with learning.
  • Monitors and utilizes student attendance, academic, behavioral, and social-emotional data to guide interventions, programming, and support planning.
  • Assists in developing, implementing, and evaluating student support plans and behavior intervention strategies.
  • Works with individual students and small groups to teach social-emotional, behavioral, and self-regulation strategies.
  • Collaborates with staff members on effective behavioral supports, interventions, and strategies to improve student success and school climate.
  • Participates in stakeholder meetings, conferences, and collaborative planning processes to support student success and well-being.
  • Maintains timely, accurate, and confidential records related to student progress, behavior incidents, family communication, and community contacts.
  • Supports a safe, positive, and inclusive school climate through respectful interactions with students, families, staff, and community members.
  • Assists with student supervision during instructional and non-instructional settings as needed.
  • Engages in ongoing professional learning, staff training, and meetings to strengthen professional practice and support district initiatives.

Education, Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Applicants must have a high school diploma and completion of college courses is preferred.
  • Exhibits positive rapport with students, parents, professional & support staff, and community.
  • Demonstrates commitment to professional growth.
  • Possesses strong interpersonal skills to develop collaborative relationships with students, colleagues, administrators, classroom teachers, support staff, and parents.
  • Has knowledge of overall high school operations.
  • Possesses the ability to problem solve and promote pro-social behaviors.
  • Has the ability and desire to work with a diverse student population with a commitment to providing a positive experience for students and their families regardless of race, culture, creed, religion, handicapping condition, social-economic status, gender, sexuality and sexual identity.
